CFL Grey Cup betting sees Stampeders favoured once again

Over the last couple of seasons, the Calgary Stampeders have cemented themselves as the best team in the CFL. In 2016 and 2017, the Stamps finished first in the West, only losing six regular-season games over those two years. In each postseason, Calgary made it to the Grey Cup but were undone by the underdogs in the Ottawa Redblacks and Toronto Argonauts.

For the Calgary Stampeders to pick themselves up after such a defeat in 2016 was one thing, but this season, they need to do it after losing once again, and by only three points in the 2017 Grey Cup. But, once again, this 2018 season sees Calgary atop the standings after 11 games.

With two wins more than the surging Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Stamps have garnered praise from CFL fans as the best team in the league once again. Led by top performer Bo Levi Mitchell, the performances of the Stamps have got plenty of patrons backing them to finally win the Grey Cup after two years of late heartbreak.

Stampeders still the dominant force

It took until Week 10 for a CFL team to muster up a performance worthy of beating the Calgary Stampeders. In Week 13, Calgary lost again in a very close game, but that hasn’t stopped fans from flooding to the betting sites in Canada to take their +115.38 odds to win it all. But, of course, there is the chance of a three-peat of upset, so some are cautiously taking their regular season conquerors in the betting, with the Roughriders at +450 and the Eskimos at +475.

Luckily for Calgary, their closest competitors are in the West so, if the standings remain to the end of the season, one of them will be knocked out by the time the Stamps appear in the postseason. Plus, it’s not getting to the Grey Cup that’s been the problem for Calgary; it’s been winning it.

Coming in from the East will almost certainly not be the CFL champions. The Toronto Argonauts have had a torrid time since hoisting the Grey Cup. A slew of injuries, including the early loss of Ricky Ray, and losses to the NFL and retirement have ended their hopes of a playoff berth.

The top spot in the East looks to be a close battle between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks. As of 11 games in, when the Calgary Stampeders rocked a 9-2 record, both East leaders could only muster a slightly positive record of 6-5. The gulf of quality between the best in the West and the best in the East is rather large, and yet, the West’s leading team has the most trouble in swatting the underdogs from the opposite division.

When the regular season standings are finalized on November 4, there’s little doubt among CFL fans that the Calgary Stampeders will be atop the West and a number of wins ahead of their next closest contender. Then the real battle begins as they look to rectify back-to-back Grey Cup defeats.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
