Shaw CFL top performers (12): Banks, Masoli and Tasker named

TORONTO — Brandon Banks, Jeremiah Masoli and Luke Tasker were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 12 of the CFL’s 2018 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

REC | BRANDON BANKS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Receiver and returner Brandon Banks helped Hamilton to a 42-28 win over rivals the Toronto Argonauts on Mark’s Labour Day Weekend.

Banks collected a personal season-high 135 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns in the contest. He also recorded 33 punt return yards and 23 missed field goal return yards.

Amid his nine receptions of the game, the 5’7” receiver delivered a crucial block on teammate Luke Tasker’s first-quarter touchdown.

The native of Garner, NC had a big series of plays in the second quarter that gave the Ticats the lead going into halftime. Banks returned a missed field goal attempt 23 yards, caught a 35-yard pass from quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, and followed it up a few plays later with a leaping 19-yard touchdown catch.

Banks had another hot streak in the fourth quarter, with three consecutive catches for 12 yards, two yards, and 27 yards, respectively. He plunged the third catch into the end zone for his second major of the evening.

Banks is third in the league with 880 receiving yards, on pace for his second straight season of 1000+ yards. He has 63 receptions and five touchdowns.

QB | JEREMIAH MASOLI | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli led the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to their fifth straight Labour Day Classic victory on Monday.

Masoli threw for 385 yards, going 26-for-35 and scoring three touchdowns.

His first touchdown pass of the game came on just his second drive, a 56-yard bomb to Luke Tasker that set the tone for the match.

Masoli got another major to end the second quarter, a 19-yard toss to Brandon Banks that sent Hamilton into the second half in the lead. His final touchdown pass came in the final frame, a 27-yard throw to Banks to cement the victory.

The six-year CFL veteran is second in the league in passing yards with 3,269, a career best and on pace for his first 5,000+ season. He is third in the CFL with 12 touchdowns.

Masoli was also named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 2 and 3, as well as a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Month for June.

REC | LUKE TASKER | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Receiver Luke Tasker was a crucial part of the Tiger-Cats’ victory on Monday evening at Tim Hortons Field.

Tasker registered 143 receiving yards on eight receptions, scoring a touchdown as well as three second-down conversions.

The touchdown came on Hamilton’s second drive, a drive which saw him make two previous catches for eight and 19 yards. Tasker snagged the three-yard throw and carried it another 53 yards for the score.

Later in the game, Tasker strung together three consecutive receptions of 12 yards, 11 yards and 10 yards as part of another Ticats drive.

Tasker has 645 yards, on pace for his third career 1000+ yard season despite missing two games.

Shaw CFL Top Performers Explained

What is the program?

The Shaw CFL Top Performers recognizes weekly and monthly player achievement in the CFL and is separate from our year end awards.

How does it work?

Each week and month during the CFL Regular Season a panel of CFL experts vote on the three top CFL Performers across the league in order. Those players are awarded points for each time they win.

Then we throw it out to you, the fans, to Retweet our Twitter posts announcing the winners. The player with the most Retweets will receive extra points and be crowned the Shaw Fan’s Choice of the Week. Remember, once the next Week begins voting ends; so get your RTs in fast!
