The Saskatchewan Roughriders have a passionate fan base, including Ben Camplin, whose interest in football started when he became a fan of their team.
βI got into football because I had always enjoyed watching the game,β Ben said. βI was an avid Rider fan from a young age, and they got me into football, to begin with.β
However, he stopped playing football when he reached high school and focused on volleyball. But he returned to the gridiron in Grade 11 after having minimal success in volleyball.
The highlight of his football career occurred during this past season.
βMy most memorable football memory so far is definitely winning the provincial championship this year,β he said. βIt is always exciting to get a medal around your neck. I’m looking most forward to defending our titles next year and keeping the tradition alive.β
Ben enjoys playing wide receiver because of the attention to detail thatβs required.
βThe thing I like most about my position is the precision that routes need to run at,β Ben said. βFor me, I believe my speed gives me an edge over my competitors.β
His most recent stats were 545 yards on 19 receptions and five touchdowns in nine games.
He doesnβt model his game after any players, but considers himself to be βshort and quickβ like βJulian Edelman or Weston Dressler.β
As for recruitment, Ben is unsure if heβll continue playing after high school, but heβs putting forth a strong effort in the classroom to open more doors and explore different options for schools.
Coach Foord has been βone of the most influential peopleβ during his time on the gridiron.
βHe is a positive leader, but maintains control over our team and always gets the most out of each player on our team,β he said.
Ben plans on hitting the weights and improving his speed in the off-season.
From his perspective, βfootball is a way to represent my school and try to contribute as much as possible to a team.β
