Monmouth, OR ā The Western Oregon University Wolves put up nearly 700 yards of offence on Saturday afternoon, handing the Simon Fraser University Clan a 48-25 loss at McArthur Field in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Quarterback AJ Robinson passed for 298 yards in leading Western Oregon to one of the largest offensive outputs in conference history, as WOU (2-1 overall) finished the contest with 684 yards, 12 shy of the GNAC record of 696, improving to 2-0 in conference play.
The loss drops SFU to 0-3 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play. WOU threw for 409 yards and also netted 275 yards on the ground. Robinson completed 16-of-24 though he was picked off three times, while backup Evan Mozzich was four of four for 111 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown to Justin Ore in the third quarter.
SFU scored touchdowns in each quarter, with quarterbacks Quinton Agosta and Ryan Schwartz each throwing 28-yards touchdown passes to Mathis Baumbach and Ben Allen respectively. Schwartz also rushed for two touchdowns.
āWe struggled with our running game, which gave them opportunities and they took advantage,ā said SFU head coach Dave Johnson following the game. āI thought the fact that we were able to generate turnovers was a positive, and that even though we are banged up I thought a lot of our young guys did an admirable job and learned a lot today.ā
Ore also caught a 27-yard TD pass from Robinson early in the second period as WOU built a 28-12 lead at the break. Ore finished the contest with six catches for 115 yards.
Running back Darryl Valdez had 201 all-purpose yards, leading the Wolves in both receiving yards (124 on five catches) and rushing (77 on 19 carries). Four other players had 29 or more rushing yards including both quarterbacks. Running back Adryan Allen had 57 on eight totes and Kirk Werhane had 38 on six rushes. Robinson netted 48 on eight carries and Mozzoch had 29 on seven carries.
Defensively, WOU, which was led by DB Bryce Peila with nine tackles, held Simon Fraser to 255 yards. Cole Tudor had 49 of SFU’s 108 rushing yards. SFUās two QBs were just 10 of 30 for 147 yards. Peila, who had 2 1/2 tackles for losses, had Western Oregon’s lone interception.
Linebacker Kevin Semenowich had a game-high 11 tackles for the Clan, which forced WOU into seven turnovers. DBs Nigel Palma, Marc DesLauriers and Chris Seminoff all had interceptions, while defensive lineman Justin Capicciotti, linebackers Brady Shimek and Andrew Marshall and Seminoff all recovered fumbles.
Game notes: Through three games this season, the Clan have only converted one of seven extra point attemptsā¦ SFU was defeated 38-0 on September 4, by WOUā¦ WOU is now 12-10 all-time against the Clan.
