WOLFE: Pass game explosion

Pass Game Explosion

My previous article examined the decreasing importance and usage of the run game. This article will describe, as I see it, why the passing game has become so dominant.

There are not too many advantages to having been around a long time, a really long time. There is however, one great benefit, I have seen and experienced a lot.

When I started coaching, some 50 years ago, the run game was king. The prevailing philosophy in 4 down football, was run the ball; “3 yards and a cloud of dust”. The passing game was viewed as having great risks. Coaches talked about every pass play having 3 potential outcomes, and 2 of them were bad – interceptions and incompletions.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
