WOLFE: Football and Academics

It has always been obvious to me that university sports teams are impacted as a consequence of their admissions standards. That is to say, that the schools with the highest standards, have the greatest difficulty winning games and championships. This is more the case in football than other sport. A recent comment from UCLA QB Josh Rosen, hit home, and created a major stir in the US. His comment came while discussing the combination of studies and football at a “big time college athletics” (BTCA) school. For those not familiar with Josh, he is UCLA’s starting QB, and is seen by some NFL GMs, as the potential #1 pick in the 2018 draft. He is an extremely talented football player, he is equally gifted academically; his scholastic goal is to acquire an MBA.

His quote; β€œRaise the SAT (scholastic aptitude test) requirements at Alabama and see what kind of team they have.” His point appears to be that if Alabama had UCLA entrance requirements, they would not be the NCAA’s most dominant team. That has always been my contention, and I set out to get some facts.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
