Brayden Benson 2

Receiver Brayden Benson has spent his football career in Sherwood Park, Alberta. He started as an atom with the Sherwood Park Warriors, and then played for two different peewee teams, the Cougars and the Sabrecats, before moving up to bantam and playing with the Rams.

In his second year of bantam, Brayden helped the Rams take home the City Championship.

“It was lots of fun,” he recalls. “Most of my friends were on that team, which made the experience better.”

A few of those friends have also played alongside Brayden for the last two years of his high school career with the Salisbury Sabres of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA). The team won the Carr Conference City Championship this past year, defeating Spruce Grove Panthers 36-29.

“We were down at half and came back to beat them,” Brayden recalls. “It was overall a fun game.”

Even sweeter was that the win capped off the Sabres’ 40th anniversary season, and Brayden was named the Sabres Most Improved Offensive Player.

“The coaches are great,” Brayden says of his experience playing for the Sabres over the last two seasons. “I’ve learned a lot and made a lot of good friends.”

When it comes to life both on the football field and off, Brayden looks to both his family and one of his teammates for inspiration — especially his father and cousin.

“If I need anything, my dad helps me to get it, and he puts me in camps and helps me get better,” Brayden says. “I look up to my cousin, and my teammate has done quiet a bit for himself in terms of football.”

Brayden is keeping his options for post-secondary football open, and hasn’t yet put much thought into where he would like his career to continue. For now, he is keeping his focus on his upcoming senior year, and is looking forward to spending his last year of high school with all his best friends.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
