Windsor’s Arjen Colquhoun shines at Michigan State camp

One of the standout performers at Monday’s Michigan State camp was Arjen Colquhoun of Windsor (Ontario) W.F. Herman High School. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back prospect impressed the MSU coaches in the testing and drill portions of the camp.

Colquhoun ran 40 yards in 4.42 seconds and had a broad jump of more than 10 feet. In the last 10 years of the MSU camp, the number of players that have clocked those numbers can be counted on one hand.

Colquhoun said about the feedback he received from the MSU coaches was positive.

“They said my performance was great and that my testing was one of best at the camp. They are interested in how I play and said I have the potential to be a very good player at the next level. I went on a full tour of everything after camp, too. The school is amazing, everything is state of the art. Michigan State has also had a lot of great players there.”

Colquhoun hasn’t received a lot of attention from many programs and recruiting services and that has been a motivating factor for him.

“I don’t feel like I have got a lot of recognition due to being from Canada,” he said. “Lots of schools already have recruits they want. I am going to work hard to show that I am just as good as them.”

Colquhoun said MSU coach Mark Dantonio wants him to return to East Lansing soon so he can get to know him better as a person. It would not be a surprise if he receives a scholarship offer at that time.

MSU has had some outstanding Canadian players over the years. Most recently, they had Old Castle product Mike Gyetvai anchor the offensive line. Gyetvai was a four-year letter winner and, if not for injuries, would have had an NFL career.

Compared to American football, Canadian rules are slightly different and the defensive backs do not play as much press coverage. You would have never known that Monday after Colquhoun shut down several Division I receiver prospects in the one-on-one portion of the camp.

The Spartans need secondary help and since Colquhoun is less than two hours away, he can make frequent trips to MSU to learn more about the staff and players.
