WECSSAA Players of the Week:

Thompson had 223 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half as Holy Names was able to build a huge lead at the half. Head Coach Rob McIntyre on the play of Thompson, ā€œMalcolm has played at a very high level all season long on both offense and defense. He plays the game extremely fast mentally and physically, and it amazes me sometimes on how fast he can process the game in front of him.ā€ On the rematch with Herman, ā€œI’m expecting them to play their best football of the season and to give us everything they have.ā€ On what it would mean to the school if the Knights were to win the Newman Championship, ā€œIt would be a validation for all the hard work that our players have committed themselves to since last year.ā€

#34 ā€“ RB/LB ā€“ James Morgan ā€“ Essex Red Raiders

James Morgan (Gr. 11) led the way on both offense and defense for the Red Raiders in their 28-14 semi-final win over the Ste. Anne’s Saints. Offensively Morgan had 25 carries for 207 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively Morgan had 9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery, while amassing 29 defensive points. Head

Coach Badi Qawwas on Morgan carrying the offensive load, ā€œWith Ste. Anne’s bracketing WR Chris Drouillard, we needed someone to step up offensively and James did exactly that.ā€ On meeting Massey in the Wilson Finals, ā€œThey’re a very well coached team with extremely talented perimeter players, namely their QB Brandon Reaume. We have to have a great tackling game and play a disciplined game defensively to give ourselves a chance.ā€ On the prospect of raising the Wilson Championship, ā€œall teams start the season with one goal in mind, and to win the championship would be icing on the cake for all the hard work these players have given since the opening of camp.ā€

#80 ā€“ QB ā€“ Desmond Verro ā€“ Assumption Purple Raiders

Desmond Verro (Gr. 12) was a one-man wrecking crew in two huge playoff victories for the Purple Raiders. In the 42-21 win over Lajeunesse, Verro had 320 yards passing & 4 TDs, as well as 145 yards rushing & 2 TDs. In the 40-28 semi-final upset of Leamington, Verro had 275 yards passing & 3 TDs, 215 yards rushing & 2 TDs, and had an 82-yard return for a TD. Head Coach Steve Bauer on Verro’s play this season, ā€œDesmond has been the catalyst of our offense all season. He has proven to be quick and elusive and once he understood the passing game it made him a double threat.ā€ On his two huge playoff games, ā€œDesmond was almost perfect in the two victories passing the ball, with 320 and 275 yards respectively and 7 TDs, but it wouldn’t be fair to not give some credit to his receivers who caught almost everything thrown their way.ā€ On trying to avenge their regular season loss to L’Essor, ā€œThis should be a great game between two teams that know each other well and are very hungry for a championship. We will need to tighten up defensively and continue to have ‘point scoring’ drives offensively.ā€

Head Coach Dan Gray on Reaume’s season, ā€œ Brandon has really come into his own as a QB and not just as an athlete. The reads and decisions he is making now are a direct result of all his hard work and dedication.ā€ On meeting Essex in the Wilson Finals, ā€œThey’re a great team and well coached. We match up really well with Essex, our team is ready to go and I know they will be ready so it should be a great game.ā€ On the prospect of raising the Wilson Championship, ā€œIt would mean the world to them, this group has been together for a while and are looking to cap off their high school careers with a win.
