Varsity Ironmen take on Sault Ste. Marie

On the weekend the Varsity Ironmen made the long trek to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Sabrecats in a highly anticipated contest.

As with all of the Ironmen games this year, the defence was huge.In a tough, physical game, the Ironmen defence thwarted the efforts of the high powered Soo offence. With two key interceptions, a blocked punt, and numerous big tackles, the Ironmen shut out the opponents for most of the game. At the half the score was indicative of the tough battle it was, 0-0.

The second half was much like the first. Unfortunately an Ironmen turnover at their own 10 yard line led to the only score the Sabrecats would get on the defense. However, the ironmen responded on the next drive. Marching the ball downfield , the Ironmen replied when Ryan Silvestri carried the ball across the goal line. That was it for regulation.

In the first OT period, the Soo went first and were held by the Ironmen defence. Unfortunately the offence couldnā€™t capitalize. In the second OT period it was the same for the Offence. The drive stalled, and a field goal attempt from 45 yards out sailed just wide. On the Soo turn, they marched to the 13 where they punted through the end zone to win with the single point, 8-7.

A great game to be sure, and a tough way to lose the first one of the season. Next up is London in a rematch of last years close playoff battle.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
