Varsity Cougars seek first victory Sunday

The Chatham-Kent Cougars reach the season’s midpoint Sunday with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Off to a 0-3 start, the Cougars can’t afford many more losses in the varsity division of the Ontario Football Conference.

They host the Hamilton Wentworth Panthers (0-1-1) at 4:30 p.m. at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

Offence has been the Cougars’ weakness so far. They’ve scored only one offensive touchdown.

“The defence is doing really well, the special teams are doing OK, but the offence is struggling,” head coach Sel Jordan said.

The Cougars have a big offensive line and power running game best suited for four-down football, but the OFC uses three downs.

They had a bye last weekend, so they used the past two weeks to make changes to the offence. They’ve altered their blocking schemes and plan to throw more often.

“It’ll be a good test for our guys,” Jordan said about Sunday’s game, “but we’re hoping some of our changes will keep us in it.”

The Cougars are in their debut season in the OFC. This is also their first year at the varsity level.
