UBC gives education, athletic opportunity to Mexican commit

UBC brings in an international commit to their team.

It is not often that Mexican student athletes are in the mix to play for Canadian universities, but that didn’t stop Diego Montoya, an offensive lineman from the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores, from committing to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

It is in Harbin, China, where this story begins. Paul Orazietti discovered Montoya in the 2016 U19 World Championships where he played for Team Mexico. Standing at 6’2, 300lbs, Thunderbirds Recruiting said “he represents a unique balance of speed, size and strength.”

It will be a major change of scenery from Montoya’s hometown of Tlajomulco de Zuniga, Mexico, to the mountainous shores of Vancouver, BC. Having already been accepted to UBC, Montoya had a choice to make as to whether to commit or not.

He told Thunderbirds Recruiting that his dream is to play professional football and to join the slim ranks of Mexican-born pro players. He added that he felt UBC gives him education and athletic opportunity.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
