Football players of the week: Hardy Cup MVPs headline weekly winners

Highlights:

  • Hardy Cup MVPs Adam Sinagra (QB – Calgary) and Jakub Jakoubek (LB – Calgary) are the offensive and defensive players of the week respectively

 NEW WESTMINSTER – After their win in the 80th Hardy Cup, Calgary Dinos quarterback Adam Sinagra and linebacker Jakub Jakoubek are the Canada West football players of the week.

In a rematch of last year’s Hardy Cup, Sinagra and Jakoubek helped guide the Dinos to the program’s 16th conference title with a thrilling 46-43 win over the UBC Thunderbirds at McMahon Stadium on Saturday in the highest scoring game in Hardy Cup history.

Sinagra, the offensive player of the week, completed 22 of his 29 pass attempts for 366 yards and a trio of touchdowns, while Jakoubek recorded an interception to go along with his 20-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter on the defensive side of the ball.

On special teams, UBC Thunderbird Trivel Pinto takes home the weekly award after racking up 156 combined return yards. The second-year T-Bird returned four kickoffs for a total of 107 yards, while adding an additional 49 yards on five punt returns.

Calgary now gets set to host the St. FX X-Men in the U Sports Mitchell Bowl. The game is slated for Saturday, November 19th at 2 p.m. MT, with the winner moving onto the Vanier Cup on Saturday, November 26th at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.

Game log: Saturday, November 12 – 22/29 for 366 yards and three touchdowns in 46-43W vs. UBC in 80th Hardy Cup.

Calgary quarterback Adam Sinagra came up big in his first Hardy Cup appearance, as the first-year Dino earned offensive MVP honours in Calgary’s 46-43 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in the highest scoring game in Hardy Cup history.

Sinagra, who has filled in the last four weeks for injured starter Jimmy Underdahl, helped the Dinos earn the win in a rematch of last year’s conference championship game.

The Pointe Claire, Que. native tossed all three of his majors in the opening half of the game, finding Dallas Boath, Whitman Tomusiak and Brendon Thera-Plamondon on TDs of 39, three, and 14 yards respectively.

Sinagra has now thrown 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions this season in six games of action, with his last four games being starts.

Saturday was a game to remember for Jakub Jakoubek, who was named the defensive MVP of the 80th Hardy Cup after being involved all over the field.

The second-year Dino recorded five tackles, an interception and a breakup in his team’s 46-43 win over UBC.

While those stats were crucial to Calgary’s win, Jakoubek’s biggest moment came in the second quarter when the linebacker scooped up a fumble by UBC quarterback Michael O’Connor at the UBC 20 and ran it home for the TD.

That major pushed the score to 22-7 in favour of the Dinos, who would withstand a second half comeback from the T-Birds to hang on for the conference championship win.

Game log: Saturday, November 12 – 107 kickoff return yards and 49 punt return yards in 46-43L @ Calgary in the 80th Hardy Cup.

Despite falling in the 80th Hardy Cup to the Calgary Dinos, return man Trivel Pinto had another big day for the UBC Thunderbirds.

Pinto, who was the Canada West defensive player of the week back in early October, returned four Calgary kickoffs for a total of 107 yards along with five Dinos punts for 49 yards.

The versatile Brampton, Ont. product also added 50 yards receiving to finish the afternoon with 206 all-puprose yards.

KNEVEL, N. ONYEKA, MESHER NAMED OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending November 14, 2016.

OFFENCE: Michael Knevel (Brantford, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Laurier

After leading his team back from a 21-point deficit to win the 109th Yates Cup on Saturday, Laurier Golden Hawks quarterback Michael Knevel (Brantford, Ont.) has been named the OUA Offensive Player of the Week.

Knevel, a fourth-year geography major, went 22-36 for 309 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Hawks stunned the Western Mustangs 43-40.

With his team trailing 40-19 with 11:23 to play in the fourth quarterback, the Brantford, Ont. native orchestrated one of the biggest comebacks in Yates Cup history, scoring 24 straight unanswered points to win the program’s first OUA championship since 2005.

The 6’5”, 220 lbs quarterback was also named the Dalt White Trophy winner and the Porter Airlines Player of the Game for his performance.

Next up, Knevel and the Golden Hawks will look to keep it going as they will travel to Laval on Saturday to take on the Rouge et Or in the Uteck Bowl.

DEFENCE: Nakas Onyeka (Brampton, Ont.)– 4th yr. – Laurier

Just days after receiving the President’s Trophy as the OUA Stand Up Defensive Player of the Year, Laurier Golden Hawks linebacker Nakas Onyeka (Brampton, Ont.) showed the Mustangs first hand just how dominant he can be.

Onyeka, a fourth-year communications studies student-athlete, has been named OUA Defensive Player of the Week after he had 8.5 tackles, 0.5 sacks and a forced fumble and recovery in the Golden Hawks thrilling 43-40 win over Western in the 109th Yates Cup, presented by lululemon.

The forced fumble will stand as one of the biggest plays of the game as it set up the Golden Hawks game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter.

In the regular season, Onyeka led OUA with 51 solo tackles, while he ranked fourth in several defensive categories, including: total tackles (59.5), tackles per game (7.4), sacks (5.5) and sack yards (40), all of which are career highs the dynamic 6’0″, 210 lbs linebacker.

Now Onyeka will look to shift his sights to making life absolutely miserable for Laval as the Rouge et Or and the Golden Hawks clash Saturday in the Uteck Bowl.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Nathan Mesher (Waterloo, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Laurier

Laurier kicker Nathan Mesher (Waterloo,Ont.) has been named the OUA Special Teams Player of the Week after he completed the Golden Hawks comeback in Saturday’s 109th Yates Cup, presented by lululemon.

Mesher, a third-year business major, was a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals, converting kicks from 22, 37, 18, 27 and the game winning 26 yard field goal with no time remaining in Laurier’s 43-40 victory.

In the biggest game of his Golden Hawks career, the Waterloo, Ont. native didn’t shy away from the spotlight as his five field goals not only match his total from the regular season, they also tie the team record for most field goals in a game.

The Laurier faithful will hope that Mesher can keep it going on Saturday against the Laval Rouge et Or with a berth in the 52nd ArcelorMittal Dofasco Vanier Cup on the line.

Montréal, November 14, 2016 – Laval receiver Jonathan Breton-Robert, Laval halfback Gabriel Ouellet and Montréal kicker Félix Ménard-Brière are the RSEQ University Football student-athletes of the week for the period ending November 13, 2016.

The rookie receiver was spectacular in the Rouge et Or Dunsmore Cup win.  The player from Saint-Anselme caught 10 passes for a total gain of 161 yards and a touchdown, the most successful performance of the game for both teams. The Physical and Health Education student played the hero at the end of the game when he transformed himself in a quarterback in a rigged play in front of the end zone. His pass was caught by Hugo Richard for the victory touchdown, a first since 2013 for Laval in the RSEQ final game. Breton-Robert’s stellar performance earned him the title of player of the game.

Third year defensive halfback Gabriel Ouellet was an important part of a defensive unit which played one of its best game of the season this Saturday. The former CEGEP Garneau Élans player ended the game with a total of 10 tackles, all done solo, the highest total amongst both teams. The kinesiology student also pulled a convenient quarterback sack in the fourth quarter while his team was trying to make its season last longer.

Once more, Félix Ménard-Brière shined in difficult weather conditions this Saturday at CEPSUM.  The fourth year kicker successfully completed two field goals in the first quarter and his foot pushed the Rouge et Or back many times during the game. In 12 punts, Ménard-Brière maintained an average of 33.3 yards, including a long 58-yard punt.

Receiver Christian Ridley of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Nov. 13, 2016.

A fourth-year bachelor of education student from Dubai, U.A.E., Ridley was named the championship MVP following the Subway AUS Loney Bowl on Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

Ridley scored two touchdowns as the X-Men defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 29-8 to advance to this year’s Mitchell Bowl being hosted by the Calgary Dinos. He had three total receptions in the win for 48 yards.

Ridley was also honoured as an AUS conference all-star at Friday night’s awards banquet.

A third-year human kinetics student from Brockville, Ont., Bell had 7.5 tackles (five solo and five assisted) in StFX’s 28-9 win over Mount Allison in the Subway AUS Loney Bowl.

He also had two pass break ups in the win.

StFX kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht has been named the AUS football special teams player of the week.

A second-year business student from Camrose, Alta., Heidebrecht scored 11 points StFX’s Subway AUS Loney Bowl win Saturday. He made good on all three field goal attempts—from 48, 17 and 12 yards—and both point-after attempts.

Heidebrecht was also honoured as an AUS conference all-star at Friday night’s football awards banquet.
