Byron Archambault’s new career as a coach

Montreal, January 30, 2017 – Former linebacker of the Carabins, Byron Archambault, clings his spikes to reorient his career on the sidelines. He returns to the University of Montreal as special teams coordinator units and linebackers positional coach.

Archambault recently informed the CFL – Hamilton Tiger-Cats, with whom he has played in the last two seasons, of his decision. He will also return to the UdeM campus to start a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at HEC Montréal, and already holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Security and Police Studies.

“As an athlete, there comes a time when you ask yourself some questions about your future. Last season, when I was injured for a period of time, I started to watch the game differently and analyze the work of the coaches. It made me realize that I was away, “said Archambault.

“Now I want to give back and share what I have experienced. It was always my plan to end my career in football as a coach and it could not be done anywhere but with the Carabins for whom I gave myself body and soul. I share the same vision and the same way of doing that coaches in place and I am very excited to work with them.

“Byron has set foot here in my first season at UdeM in 2011. We have grown and experienced success together. He understands our team culture and has even helped to set it up, he was an undisputed leader as a player, “said Carabins head coach Danny Maciocia.

“He is a youngster who has worked extremely hard and has always represented us in the right way and is already well respected by our players. He gave us a helping hand for two years and already we could see his potential to become a very good coach, especially by his way of communicating, “added Maciocia about one who has been a guest coach at the spring camp 2016 of the Blues.

During his career as a player with the Blues, Archambault collected several honors, including those of defensive player of the year in Quebec and member of the first team of stars in Canada in 2014. That same year, he also Played a crucial role in the conquest of the first Vanier Cup of the Carabins. Drafted in the second round, the Tiger-Cats’ 17th overall pick in 2015, he had previously taken part in the NFL mini-camp of the New York Giants.

Paul-Eddy Saint-Vilien appointed Defensive Coordinator

In addition to the addition of Archambault, Maciocia has made another change to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. After leading the defensive front and linebackers, Paul-Eddy Saint-Vilien will now coordinate the Carabins defense, a role played by Maciocia over the past four seasons.

Previously, Saint-Vilien was the head coach of the Nomades of the Cégep de Montmorency and the defensive coordinator of the Spartans of the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. He was also very successful in leading the Team Québec and Team Canada defense for two years, as well as the Défi Est-Ouest. He has been celebrating at the UdeM since 2014, having made a first stay from 2008 to 2011.

“I am very proud of this mark of confidence, becoming a defensive coordinator on the university circuit has always been my plan. This is a great challenge and I feel I have been there on my career path, “explained Saint-Vilien. Over the past few years, Danny has been very involved in strategies and I intend to maintain this spirit of collaboration.

“Paul-Eddy has a very good football head and I have always greatly respected his contribution as a coach,” said Maciocia. We are often on the same wavelength. He was already playing a leading role and will be able to continue to help us in his new role. He is notably known for his preparation of the players and his excellent adjustments in situations of matches.
