U of S Huskie’s Etienne Selected In First Round Of CFL Draft (video)

Saskatoon’s Jade Etienne became the fourth University of Saskatchewan Huskie football player to be selected in the first round of the CFL Canadian Draft Sunday.

Etienne, a 6-3, 190 pound wide receiver, was selected fourth overall to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The selection is the third highest in Huskie football history behind safety Dylan Barker picked first overall to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2008 and Dan Farthing second overall to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1991. The other first round selection was Nathan Hoffart seventh overall to Saskatchewan in 2005. He is also the third Huskie to be selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in history.

“I want to thank everyone for the love and support throughout this year,” said Etienne. “I’m really just taking it all in now and I can’t wait to get out there with the ball and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It is a dream come true to have a shot at the CFL.”

In his third season, Etienne led the Canada West in receiving yards per game averaging 103. He caught 28 passes, scoring six touchdowns. He was a threat on the long pass hauling in touchdown catches from 87-, 76-, 53- and 41-yards. Etienne was named a Canada West All-Star and a CIS First Team All-Canadian.

Etienne is the 50th Huskie to be drafted to the CFL since 1985.

St. Francis Xavier X-Man linebacker Henoc Muamba was selected first overall by the Blue Bombers. Rice Universitys offensive lineman Scott Mitchell (Edmonton Eskimos) and University of Calgary Dino receiver Anthony Parker (Calgary Stampeders) rounded out the top three selections in the draft.

Huskie linebacker Peter Thiel and receiver Braeden George were also eligible to be selected by CFL teams in the draft.

The Huskies open the 2011 Canada West football season September 2 against the Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. Football season tickets are on sale now!
