Twelve former Saskatchewan Huskies on CFL rosters

Twelve former University of Saskatchewan Huskie football players have found their way onto Canadian Football League rosters for the 2011 season.

The Huskie alums appear on five of the eight CFL rosters with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes each with three. Huskies also appear on the lineup sheets for the Toronto Argonauts, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Montreal’s roster includes 2008 CFL top lineman Scott Flory, cornerback Paul Woldu and defensive end Ivan Brown. Flory, who won a Vanier Cup with the Huskies in 1998, was a CIS All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star in both 1997 and 1998. In nine straight seasons, Flory has been named at least a CFL Division All-Star. Paul Woldu cracked the Montreal lineup right after being drafted in fifth round in the 2008 CFL Canadian draft and found himself playing in the 2008 Grey Cup with the Alouettes. He played with the Huskies for two seasons and was named a Canada West All-Star and a CIS First Team All-Canadian in 2007. The Alouettes drafted Ivan Brown in the fourth round, 31st overall in 2009. He will once again start the season on the practice roster.

Gene Makowsky enters his 16th season on the Roughriders roster. Playing for the Huskies from 1991-94, Makowsky won two Hardy Cup Championships with the Huskies. He has been named a CFL Lineman All-Star five times in his career. Patrick Neufeld will join Makowsky on the Riders offensive line. Neufeld was drafted in 2010 to the Riders 33rd overall. In his last two seasons with the Huskies, he was named a Canada West All-Star and in 2010 a CIS First Team All-Canadian. Graeme Bell, who was traded on CFL Draft Day to the Riders, will suit up at full back in his six CFL season.

Recent Huskie graduate Scott McHenry will suit up at fullback for Winnipeg, while 2011 fourth overall Blue Bombers draft pick Jade Etienne will get a chance in the CFL at the wide receiver position. Etienne turned heads after leading the Canada West in receiving yards per game averaging 103 in just his third season. He caught 28 passes, scoring six touchdowns.

Slotback Chad Rempel and kicker Grant Shaw were named to the Argonauts roster. Rempel suited up for the Huskies from 2000-04. Shaw will play in his second season with Toronto after being selected by the Argos in the second round, 11th overall in the 2010 draft. He was an All-Canadian in 2010 for the Huskies.

Dylan Barker, who was the 2008 first overall pick in the CFL draft, will once again suit up for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, joining him will be wide receiver Rory Kohlert. He tallied 461 yards on 37 receptions for the Huskies in 2010. Barker will start the season on the injured reserve.

Makowsky, Flory, Brown and Woldu have all won Grey Cups since joining the CFL.
