Thunder 16, Riders 13 – OVFL Varsity

The home squad, Toronto Thunder, did enough to secure a victory against the visiting Ottawa Myers Riders 16 to 13 at Birchmount Stadium.

The opening quarter was dominated by the leg of Tyler Crapigna, kicking field goals of 54 (yes, 54) AND 12. The 12-yarder was set up by a nice catch by Dallon Kuprowski.

Early in the second quarter the home team responded on a 10 yard pass reception by #23, Kyle Mullen. The convert was kicked by #20, Patrick Yearwood, to make the score 7 to 6. The half ended 7 to 6, thanks in part to the Thunder defense and 2 interceptions by the defensive secondary.

The start of the second half again saw some great defensive play by the Thunder and third quarter score replicated the halftime score of 7 to 6. But the Thunder defenses’ efforts were rewarded on the first play of the 4th quarter when Yearwood hit a 33 yard field goal (set up by a nice return from#24, Trevor Harvey).

Not long after, Yearwood kicked his second field goal of the day from 22 yards out, making the score 13 to 6. Three minutes later Yearwood kicked his 3rd (30 yards) again after a good return by the Thunder…this time by #3, Major Newman.

The Myers scored at 2:12 remaining in the game when Connor Edwards hooked up with Shane Hill on a 50 yard pass and run for the touchdown. But the Thunder ran out the clock on the next possession. FINAL 16 TO 13.
