Teammates for life, pair joins StFX

StFX adds three RICC commits to their 2018 class.

Linebackers Zalman Scherer and Jaime Sebastian, and defensive back Calen Fennell from Royal Imperial College of Canada, have dreamed about playing university football, and what better way to make that dream a reality than as teammates on the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.

Zalman Scherer

Zalman Scherer is not from Canada, but the young American has grown accustomed to the Canadian lifestyle. Now, he will be moving out east to play with the X-Men. “I chose StFX because they gave me an opportunity for a great education and a great chance at earning a championship at a high level,” he said. “The coaching staff is great and is a big reason why I committed here.”

Scherer will be joining his RICC teammate, Jaime Sebastian, at StFX. He said it will be cool attending the school with him.

Before moving to the cold-weather climate of St. Catherines, Ontario, to play with the RICC Knights, Scherer, who is 6’0, 215lbs, lived in California. In his hometown of Danville, California, he played at Monte Vista High School before moving to Stellar Prep in Oakland. He will be taking business.

Jaime Sebastian

When StFX came calling, they offered Jaime Sebastian an offer he couldn’t refuse. “I chose to commit to StFX because of the great opportunities it had to offer, (the) great academics and a fantastic coaching staff,” he said. “Head Coach Waterman and Coach Svec are awesome coaches that I was able to connect with and I’m really looking forward to being coached by them and getting better as a football player.”

Sebastian added that during his recruitment, the X-Men coaches were always friendly and showed a keen interest in him becoming apart of the X-Men team. The 6’2, 205lbs outside and middle linebacker is interested in sociology.

Sebastian was born in Bogotá, Colombia. His family then moved to the Ottawa area. He first started playing football at Renfrew Collegiate Institute and was the team’s rookie of the year. He won a 2015 OVFL championship with the Myers Riders JV squad. He also suited up with the NCAFA Myers Riders and was named as an all-star. He helped his team, Team West, beat Team East in the 2015 all-star game. That year, he also won a coaches’ award. He has spent the last two seasons with the RICC Knights.

“I want to thank God, family and friends that have helped me through my process and I’m excited to keep preserving in the classroom and the football field at St. Francis Xavier University,” he said.

Calen Fennell

Originally from Thunderbay, Ontario, Calen Fennell has been down in St. Catherines, Ontario, playing for the RICC Knights. Standing at 5’8, 170lbs, he told X-Men Touchdown Club that he committed to the team “because of the tradition, coaching staff and the athletic opportunity. StFX is also a great fit athletically and academically.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
