Q and A with Head Coach Mike Humenny

a) What were the hilights of the tryout process for you?

With 250 players vying for 40 roster spots, the competition during our tryout camps was intense. From our two selection camps, we were able to select the 40 best players to represent Saskatchewan the the Canada Cup. As a coaching staff, we were faced with many difficult decisions and we were very impressed at the level of talent amongst the players at every position.

b) What are the teams strengths that the coaches will attempt to hi-light?

On offense, we have a veteran group of offensive linemen who seemed to gel as a unit during the selection camps. We will be able to put forth a balanced attack with many skilled players at runningback and receiver. Defensively, our two main strengths are speed and aggressiveness. The defensive as a whole played very well in each of the scrimmages during our tryout camps.

c) What are your coaching staffs strengths?

Overall, our staff has a high level of technical expertise. Many of our coaches are former players at many levels and bring forth a wealth of valuable playing and coaching experience. Preparation and attention to detail by each of the coaches are also strengths that will be valuable to us during the tournament.

c) How do you feel about your first opponent?

We open the tournament against Team Manitoba. From past experiences against them, we feel that this contest will once again be very competitive. Look for both teams to be very well coached and super aggressive from the opening kickoff.

d) What will be your teams biggest challenge during the tournament?

Since the tournament will consist of three games in seven days, each team will need to remain healthy to have a chance to play for gold. We have been busy preparing for our opening opponent, but we will need put together subsequent gameplans during a short timeframe. We, as coaches, are confident in the abilities of both our players and support staff and are looking forward to the opportunities that await us in Nova Scotia.
