Sun adds two easterners to roster

Two new Okanagan Sun recruits arrived in town Monday and had their first practice with the club last night.

Offensive lineman Dave Allan and running back / linebacker Brandon Donkers joined the club after their OFC varsity club (Chatham-Kent Cougars) wrapped up their summer league last week. The Cougars play in the 19 and under league operated by the Ontario Football Conference

Both players were team mates of Sun defensive lineman Derek Hurlock when they played for Jeff Sunderland and the Sarnia Sturgeon of the OFC varsity in 2009.

The 6’2, 290 pound Allan made not only his first visit to British Columbia when he arrived on Monday, but also stepped on a plane for the first time to make the trek out west. Allan on his new city;

“It’s beautiful here, I love it.”

Allan made his physical presence felt quickly Tuesday night and his pancaking of a veteran Sun linebacker during blocking drills was met with loud hoots and hollers from his new team mates.

The 5’10, 195 pound Donkers has been on player personnel director Howie Zaron’s radar for over a month and played both linebacker and running back in Ontario. He took his first reps with the running backs last

Brandon on arriving to a new club 3 games into the season;

“The guys here were great, they opened up to us. Everyone introduced themselves to us, it wasn’t awkward at all, I felt right at home.”

Both players are expected to see their first action Saturday afternoon when the Sun take on the VI Raiders.
