Stamps beat argos in home opener


The Calgary Stampeders started the 2010 Canadian Football League season in victorious fashion on Thursday as they defeated the Toronto Argonauts 30-16 at McMahon Stadium.

“I thought we played well in all three three phases,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “We had a lot of missed opportunities but on the other hand I think our rookie kicker proved to a lot of people that he can play in this league.”

That would be Rob Maver, who converted five of his six field-goal attempts and accounted for 18 of the Stampeders’ points.

Despite a wide edge in offence — 500 total yards for Calgary compared to 246 for Toronto — the result was in doubt until Stamps linebacker Malik Jackson recovered a fumble after Wes Lysack sacked Argops quarterback Cleo Lemon and returned it for a touchdown with 22 seconds to play.
