Spartans alumnus makes return to alma mater to celebrate Super Bowl history

As the Lorne Park Spartans prepare for their playoff run during their bye week, both the senior and junior boys were treated to a memorable event the kids are sure to remember for a long time.

Lorne Park Spartans’ alumni Klaus Wilmsmeyer visited the school to honor the Spartans’ football program with a commemorative golden football made to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the Super Bowl. An initiative created by the NFL called the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll, the league will be issuing specially designed golden NFL footballs made by Wilson, to every high school that has produced a player or coach on past active Super Bowl rosters.

Due to Klaus’ participation in the 1995 Super Bowl, The Super Bowl Honor Roll program gave a football to Klaus for him to deliver to the Lorne Park football program for their role in Super Bowl history and to honor the football tradition that the Spartans have produced over the years.

Along with Wilmsmeyer delivering the commemorative gold football to Lorne Park, the Spartans football program produced Klaus with an honorary Lorne Park football and retired Wilmsmeyer’s jersey in order to celebrate the career of one of their highest achieving alumni. “It’s great to give back and be here,” says Wilmsmeyer. “The tradition continues, the program is still winning which is awesome. I’m glad the program has continued,” Wilmsmeyer says before the presentation.

While many current and former NFL players who participated in past Super Bowls have already delivered their gold footballs to their former high schools, Klaus Wilmsmeyer decided to wait until later on in the Spartans’ football season to provide the school with their honorary football.

Among the current Spartans in attendance was quarterback Alex Lavric who touched on how great it is to see alumni comes back and share their success with the current student-athletes. “We love having a former player come back. It’s a great opportunity for the school to showcase everything we have to offer and all that we have achieved,” says Lavric after taking photos with the Wilmsmeyer and the gold football. “I know now that success in this program hasn’t changed, and that the winning tradition that this school had years ago is still here today. Moving forward, we think seeing one of our own come back, gives us confidence. So we definitely want to make Klaus proud and achieve the highest level possible.”

Wilmsmeyer is a former NFL Punter, who played six seasons in the league and was a member of the San Francisco 49ers’ championship team that won Super Bowl XXIX in 1995. In 1988, Wilmsmeyer graduated from Lorne Park Secondary and went on to attend the University of Louisville. After playing four years for the Louisville Cardinals, Wilmsmeyer was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1992.
