SOURCES: Colzie III to be hired at SMU Huskies Head Coach

Several media and CIS sources have indicated that James Colzie III will be moving to the East Coast to take on the job of Head Coach of the Saint Mary’s (SMU) Huskies.

This past fall as Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach of the UBC Thunderbirds, Colzie III helped the team win the Vanier Cup.

Before the Thunderbirds, Colzie III was the Defensive Coordinator with NCAA Division 2’s Simon Fraser Clan.

CFC reported on January 16th that Colzie was one of two candidates that had turned down the Huskies.  It appears that has been turned around to the delight of administration.

Colzie III’s coaching career began in 2000 with Florida International University as Assistant Special Teams Coordinator where he was in charge of cornerbacks and returners.  Soon after in 2004, he returned to his alma mater, NCAA Division 1’s Florida State where he began a three year stint as Cornerbacks Coach under Bobby Bowden.

In 2007, he moved on to NCAA Divison 2’s Valdosta State where he helped the team to the Division 2 National Championship as Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach.  Then, he joined University of West Georgia where he wore several different hats including Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Backs Coach. Colzie III has also been previously invited to instruct the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.

The Huskies have not made an official announcement yet pending paperwork to be done but sources have indicated an agreement is in principle. Athletic Director Kevin Downie told local media outlets that at the beginning of last week that the Huskies has selected their choice for Head Coach.

During the hiring process, the Huskies received over 35 applications for the position.  This position became open when the Huskies relieved Perry Marchese of his duties back this past November.

Currently, AJ Tufford has been serving as the Huskies Interim Head Coach.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
