Six local football players selected for Canada Cup


Okotoks football players and coaches will make up a large contingent of a group that will fly to Nova Scotia this summer to play some football.

The foothills had six players selected to the U-18 Team Alberta that will play in the Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia July 10-18.

The six players were selected from 90 players who went to the the final camp in Edmonton last weekend.

The provincial Tier II champions Foothills Falcons had three players selected to the team. They are running back Trace McLellan-Eeles, receiver Kris Stretton and defensive back Devan Karl.

Hunter Turnbull, a safety for the Holy Trinity Knights, was selected to play in Team Alberta’s secondary.

The Knights’ strong-armed quarterback Mark Oness was also selected for the team.

Warren Nielson, a defensive lineman from the Highwood Mustangs in High River also made the team.

The head coach of Team Alberta is Bryan Brandford, a former head coach with the Oilfields Drillers and Highwood Mustangs. Brandford, the principal at Okotoks Junior High School, is also an assistant coach of the Calgary Junior Colts.

The Team Alberta assistant coach is Kelly Stickel, who is with the Foothills Eagles minor football program.

More than 300 high school players registeed to play for the team when the applications were taken in January.
