The Wolverines improved their record to a perfect 2-0 with a big win against the Mill Woods Grizzlies at Clarke on Tuesday night on the strength of a strong defensive showing and some opportune scoring when they really needed it.

The squad came out of the gate with both feet running, opening the game with an impressive 65-yard drive that was capped with a 13-yard scamper to paydirt by running back Kurtis Maltby. But as it turned out, that was the last sustained offense by either team for most of the rest of the game. The defenses took over, and although both offenses were able to move the ball in spots, there was little real offensive “flow” to the game after that. In fact, the balance of the Wolverine scoring can be attributed to a stout defensive display.

Early in the second quarter, the Wolverines forced the Grizzlies to concede a safety to make the score 9-0, which held until the end of the half when a defensive breakdown allowed the Grizzlies to strike on a long pass-and-run play, sending the teams to the locker room with the Wolverines protecting a narrow 9-6 lead.

The third and most of the fourth were scoreless, but midway through the fourth the Wolverines put together a six-minute drive that, although it did not score, took a lot of time off the clock and forced the Grizzlies deep in their own end. Both factors would prove pivotal; on the Grizzlies’ first play, an errant pitch was pounced upon by Ben Lysak who romped to the house to make the score 16-6.

But the Grizzlies were not done. With only a few minutes left, they struck for another long pitch and catch to make the score 16-14 after the two-point conversion. However it turned out to be too little too late; the Wolverines were able to kill the clock and preserve the win.

The defense was indeed the story. The Wolverines forced the Grizzlies to turn the ball over on downs no less than seven times during the game, and the front seven was constantly stuffing holes and pressuring the quarterback with numerous hurries and more than a few sacks. All in all a good, solid performance by the defense and a good preparation for the next game against the Shock on Saturday. Game time in St. Albert is 12:30 PM.
