Shaw CFL top performers (SEPT): Masoli, Powell, Ward named

TORONTO — Jeremiah Masoli, William Powell and Lewis Ward were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month for September of the CFL’s 2018 season.

Performer of the Month for September includes all appearances from Week 12 through Week 16.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | JEREMIAH MASOLI | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has emerged as a leader on Hamilton, turning in a stellar month at the helm of the Ticats.

Masoli scored 12 passing touchdowns in September, helping Hamilton to three wins in that time.
The San Francisco native ranks second among CFL QBs with 4,286 passing yards. He has 21 touchdowns on 309 attempts.

Masoli was previously named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 2, 3 and 12, as well as a Top Performer of the Month for June.

RB | WILLIAM POWELL | OTTAWA REDBLACKS

Running back William Powell had an impressive September, scoring two touchdowns. He had two games of 140+ yards (in Weeks 14 and 15), and registered 15+ carries three times.

He had a standout game in Week 14 against Saskatchewan, recording a season-high 148 rushing yards. His two touchdowns came in this game: one on a 19-yard run after powering through several defenders, and another on a big 69-yard play.

In his third CFL season, Powell has recorded his second consecutive 1000+ yard rushing season.

Powell leads all running backs with 1,141 yards and 208 carries. He was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Week 14.

TORONTO — Zach Collaros, Kevin Fogg and Don Unamba were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 16 of the CFL’s 2018 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | ZACH COLLAROS | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Quarterback Zach Collaros steered the Saskatchewan Roughriders to their sixth win in seven games on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Montreal Alouettes 34-29.

Collaros collected 394 yards in the contest in addition to scoring a touchdown.

In the first quarter, Collaros executed a six-play touchdown drive, completing four passes in the leadup to a Tre Mason running major.

His touchdown pass came at the close of the first frame as he ran to escape several Montreal players closing in, tossing the ball 23 yards to Kyran Moore in the end zone to give Saskatchewan the lead.

Collaros stitched together several drives to set up running touchdowns and field goals for his teammates, giving the Roughriders a possession time of 35:20.

Collaros has 2,267 yards and nine passing touchdowns on 172 completions in ten games. He’s also recorded 72 rushing yards this season.

DB | KEVIN FOGG | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Defensive back Kevin Fogg helped the Blue Bombers to a decisive win over their West division rivals in Edmonton on Saturday evening, strengthening Winnipeg’s playoff position.

Fogg had 25 punt return yards, three defensive tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble return and a touchdown in Saturday’s action-packed game.

In the first frame, Fogg forced a D’haquille Williams fumble to halt Edmonton’s drive.

His interception came near the top of the third quarter, when he returned a Mike Reilly pass attempt 73 yards for a touchdown to solidify Winnipeg’s lead.

Later in the third, Fogg recovered a fumble forced by a teammate to give Winnipeg possession.

Fogg has 35 defensive tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown in twelve games.

DB | DON UNAMBA | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Defensive back Don Unamba was part of a strong Ticats squad that triumphed over the BC Lions at home on Saturday.

Unamba had five defensive tackles, including one for a loss, as well as an interception and a touchdown.

The native of Arlington, Texas interrupted the Lions’ very first drive of the game, picking off a Jonathon Jennings pass and returning it 30 yards for his second career touchdown.

That score set the tone for the match as Hamilton turned in a strong performance with Unamba making big hits for the defense.

Unamba has 43 defensive tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception and one touchdown in 14 games.

What is the program?

The Shaw CFL Top Performers recognizes weekly and monthly player achievement in the CFL and is separate from our year end awards.

How does it work?

Each week and month during the CFL Regular Season a panel of CFL experts vote on the three top CFL Performers across the league in order. Those players are awarded points for each time they win.

Then we throw it out to you, the fans, to Retweet our Twitter posts announcing the winners. The player with the most Retweets will receive extra points and be crowned the Shaw Fan’s Choice of the Week. Remember, once the next Week begins voting ends; so get your RTs in fast!

What is the scoring system?

Here are the points for each award winner.
