SHAW CFL top performers (5): Hughes, Nichols, Evans named

TORONTO — Charleston Hughes, Matt Nichols and Shaq Evans were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 6 of the CFL’s 2019 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

DL | CHARLESTON HUGHES | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Charleston Hughes played a vital role as the Saskatchewan Roughriders earned their second victory of the season – a 38-25 win over the visiting BC Lions.

The 12-year vet sacked Mike Reilly three times while adding two tackles for a loss, a career-high ten tackles and two forced fumbles.

Hughes got to Reilly on the Lions’ second possession of the game and BC was forced to settle for a 50-yard field goal. His second sack came in the second quarter, resulting in a loss of seven yards, and his final one came in the fourth for a four-yard loss. It was his 31st career multi-sack game.

Hughes now has 122 career sacks, good for 9th all-time; he needs five to surpass Stewart Hill for 8th.

This season, the Saginaw, Mich., native has registered a league-leading eight sacks, while adding 22 tackles and two forced fumbles.

QB | MATT NICHOLS | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Matt Nichols and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1960 after defeating Ottawa 31-1 on Friday night.

The native of Redding, Calif., was highly efficient, converting 25-of-29 passes (86.2%), while adding two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 10 yards against the REDBLACKS.

His first touchdown pass came in the second quarter to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Nichols connected with a wide-open Andrew Harris as he ran a wheel route for a 15-yard major. His second came on the Bombers’ next possession; he found Kenny Lawler across the middle who took it to the house for the 54-yard touchdown. The game marked Nichols’ fourth multi-touchdown performance of the year.

The product of Eastern Washington has now recorded 19 consecutive completions, setting a new benchmark for the Blue Bombers.

This season, he has passed for 1,150 yards, 12 touchdowns and has completed 73.2% of his passes.

REC | SHAQ EVANS | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Shaq Evans had a career-night on Saturday in Regina.

The UCLA alum recorded five catches for a personal-best 158 yards (31.6 yards per catch) and a touchdown. Evans’ major came late in the fourth to ice the game. Cody Fajardo slung it deep and found him for the 50-yard score.

Evans also made an incredible catch earlier in the quarter to set up a three-yard touchdown run which extended the Riders’ lead to 12.

This season, Evans has totalled 20 receptions for 408 yards and two touchdowns.
