SFU announces 2010 football schedule

Burnaby, B.C. ā€“ Simon Fraser University Clan football fans are not only going to get a return to the teamā€™s American rules roots next season when the Clan make their Great Northwest Athletic Conference debut this fall as part of SFUā€™s NCAA Division II transition, they will also get more football, as Simon Fraser will play ten regular season games next year, including five at home. SFU released their 2010 football schedule on Thursday, featuring eight GNAC conference games, and two non-conference contests including the annual Shrum Bowl against UBC.

ā€œItā€™s exciting, and I really want to thank the GNAC for accommodating our school next season,ā€ said SFU head coach Dave Johnson of the 2010 schedule. ā€œI had the opportunity last season to watch Western Oregon play Central Washington, and the environment and quality of play was very impressive. We are going to have our work cut out for us next season, but itā€™s going to be a phenomenal experience for our guys when they get the opportunity to play in those environments.ā€

SFU opens their 2010 season at home against Western Oregon on September 4, on Fox Field, and have another home game on September 11, against non-conference opponent Southern Oregon, before embarking on their first road trip to Western Oregon on September 18.

ā€œThe GNAC actually plans their schedule quite far in advance [compared to other leagues], and accordingly they had to move some dates around to fit us in,ā€ added Johnson. ā€œNormally we wouldnā€™t be playing the same opponent in a two-week span.ā€

The Clanā€™s toughest test of the year will be against Central Washington on September 25. The Wildcats went undefeated in GNAC play last season, and were ranked No.1 in NCAA Division II after the final poll of the regular season. The Shrum Bowl also lives on for another season, as SFU will play at UBC in the week following their game against Dixie State, under Canadian rules. The Clan will close out their season with two road games, finishing at Humboldt State on November 13.
