Sights set on championship for UofS commits

Huskies add two CJFLers and an out-of-province high schooler to their team.

Along with receiving a quality education, receiver Jesse Kuntz from the Calgary Colts (CJFL) and defensive linemen Riley Pickett from the Saskatoon Hilltops and Ozioma Egbuedo from Fletchers Meadows Secondary School are all probably looking to do one thing with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies: win.

Jesse Kuntz

Jesse Kuntz may be leaving the province of his birth, but the product of Calgary, Alberta, won’t be alone in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. “I chose to commit to UofS because it is a high-calibre program with an outstanding history that is close to my family in Calgary. I also have family in Saskatchewan, which helped in my decision making,” he said.

In his career, Kuntz has had a countless number of teammates. Some have earned a spot on the Huskies roster. “They had nothing but good things to say about the program,” he said. “Head Coach Scott Flory and I got along right away. He is a straightforward, down-to-earth coach who has extremely high ambitions for the future.”

The 6’0, 170lbs athlete is also familiar with Coach Jeremy Long, who is an alumnus of his high school. “I know him well enough to know that he is a very strong leader and I will become a better athlete being coached by him,” the potential business student said.

Kuntz has a grand total of 13 seasons under his belt. He spent the majority of his career with the Calgary Hilltoppers before joining the Notre Dame Pride (Calgary High School Athletic Association). For the last two years, he has played with the Calgary Colts. In 2013 and 2014, he was a back-to-back provincial champion with the Pride.

Riley Pickett

When you’ve found success in your home, why move? Riley Pickett has won three national championships with his hometown CJFL team, the Saskatoon Hilltops. He hopes to carry over some of that success to the Huskies.

“I wanted to stay in my hometown and bring a championship to the city of Saskatoon,” he said. “(The coaches are) very good. They’re doing an excellent job with the rebuilding process.”

The 6’3, 240lbs rush end spent three years with the Hilltops. Last season he was a PFC all-star, an all-Canadian and the PFC’s most outstanding defensive lineman. He will be taking Business.

Ozioma Egbuedo

Ozioma Egbuedo comes from Brampton, Ontario, where he attended Fletchers Meadow Secondary School. He has suited up for the North Halton Crimson Tide (OFA). The defensive tackle is 6’0, 300lbs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
