Most Valuable Player – Adam Vance, Concordia University (Nominated for U SPORTS Hec Crighton Trophy)

Concordia Stinger fifth-year quarterback Adam Vance has been awarded the Jeff Russel Trophy as the RSEQ football conference’s MVP. He will be the Quebec nominee for Hec Crighton Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian football player in U SPORTS. Vance, who comes to Quebec from Visalia, California, finished the regular season on top of the RSEQ in several statistical categories. He completed 148 of 246 passes (60.2 percent) for 2014 yards and seven touchdowns. He had the most attempts, completions and touchdowns in the league. With 2014 passing yards, he was the only pivot in the RSEQ to break the 2000-yard mark. The six-foot-two, 208-pound all-star helped Concordia establish the No. 1 passing offence and the No. 2 overall offence in the RSEQ. He also helped James Tyrrell, the top receiver in the conference, and rookie Jeremy Murphy earn all-star honours. Vance played two years at Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach, California before joining the Stingers in 2017. He completes his Canadian university football career with 313 completions on 538 attempts for 4355 yards and 15 touchdowns in three seasons. The last Concordia football player to receive this honour was quarterback Trenton Miller, also an American from Buffalo, N.Y., in 2015.

Defensive Player of the Year – CFC40/CFC100 Andrew Seinet-Spaulding, McGill University (Nominated for U SPORTS Presidents’ Trophy)

Andrew Seinet-Spaulding of Pierrefonds, Quebec, becomes the first McGill University football player in school history to merit both, the conference’s most outstanding lineman and defensive player-of-the-year honours, in the same season. A unanimous selection on the RSEQ all-star team, the six-foot, 292-pound defensive tackle led the Quebec league in both quarterback sacks (7 for 43 yards) and tackles for loss (13.5 for 62 yards). Despite being double-teamed by every opponent, the 23-year-old social work senior tallied 27.5 total tackles, 22 of them solo, in eight regular-season games. A co-captain and recipient of a Montreal Alouettes athletic excellence bursary, Seinet-Spaulding was also credited with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He is the fourth McGill player to win the conference’s nomination for the President’s Trophy, and the first in 17 years. The previous recipients were all linebackers — Mike Mahoney (2002), Mark Chouinard (1981) and Marc Lemery (1980).

Lineman of the Year – CFC40/CFC100 Andrew Seinet-Spaulding, McGill University (Nominated for U SPORTS J.P. Metras Trophy)

Andrew Seinet-Spaulding of Pierrefonds, Quebec, is the fourth McGill player to be named as the conference’s most outstanding lineman. Two of the team’s previous winners went on to be drafted by an NFL team, including Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (2013) and Randy Chevrier (2000). McGill’s inaugural recipient was defensive tackle Marc Joncas in 1980. Seinet-Spaulding was a unanimous selection on the RSEQ all-star team. A six-foot, 292-pound defensive tackle, he led the Quebec league in both quarterback sacks (7) and tackles for loss (13.5), despite being double-teamed by every opponent. The 23-year-old social work senior tallied 27.5 total tackles, 22 of them solo, in eight regular-season games. A co-captain and recipient of a Montreal Alouettes athletic excellence bursary, he was also credited with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Leadership and Social Commitment Award – Alexandre Pare, McGill University (Nominated for U SPORTS Russ Jackson Trophy)

Alexandre Pare of Neuville, Quebec, is the 15th McGill University player in 33 years to be named as the conference’s nominee for the prestigious Russ Jackson Trophy.  A six-foot-2, 222-pound linebacker, he is a three-year starter who finished third on the team this season in total tackles with 33 in seven games. He registered 25 solo tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks. A francophone who had to make the challenging adjustment to studying in English, the 22-year-old kinesiology senior has adapted well. He is an Honours student who has earned Academic All-Canadian status and merited a spot on the Principal’s Student-athlete Honour Roll with a grade-point average of 3.95 (out of 4) last year. Expecting to graduate in December, he has applied to attend medical school. Off the field, he was instrumental in coordinating a number of events, including a community service initiative, where he organized a football team activity to clean up the “McGill Ghetto”, a student-housing area near the campus, picking up litter in the neighbourhood. This project made the local news and was featured on the CTV affiliate in Montreal. He also initiated a highly successful structure of accountability for his teammates to participate in regular off-season workouts, as well as other events on campus.

Coach of the Year – Glen Constantin, Université Laval (Nominated for U SPORTS Frank Tindall Trophy)

For the ninth time in his career, Glen Constantin has the honour of being named RSEQ coach of the year. It was a challenging year for the Rouge et Or, due in large part to the departure of quarterback Hugo Richard, and of defensive ends Mathieu Betts and Vincent Desjardins to the pros. Despite a loss to the Carabins in the beginning of the season, Constantin was able to rally his troops in the quest for excellence, and went undefeated for the remainder of the season. In his nineteenth season as coach, Glen Constantin brought his team to a fifteenth regular season title, with a 7-1 record.

Volunteer Coach of the Year – David Carson, McGill University (Nominated for U SPORTS Gino Fracas Award)

David Carson of Brossard, Quebec, becomes the second McGill recipient in school history to merit the conference’s Gino Fracas Award nomination as volunteer coach of the year, joining 1995 winner Gary Kirchner. Currently in his fifth season with the McGill coaching staff, he handles quarterbacks and special teams. Despite operating his own business, Carson spends most of the day with the football program, then heads off to manage his cleaning company after practice every evening. He has a long history of involvement as a coach and administrator with minor football, dating back to 1992, including coaching at the Peewee and Bantam, Junior and CEGEP levels. His previous teams have won titles at every level, including multiple Wilson Cup U-15 tournaments and the Bol d’Or junior college championship in 2014 with CEGEP de Vieux-Montreal.

RSEQ Offensive Rookie of the Year Jeremy Murphy, Concordia University

It’s no surprise that versatile inside receiver Jeremy Murphy, who is from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que. and checks in at six-feet and 180 pounds, has been named the RSEQ Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Concordia Stinger all-star closed out the 2019 regular season with very impressive numbers. He caught 34 passes for 491 yards and four touchdowns in eight games. He was third in the conference in receiving yards, but he led all receivers in the RSEQ with four touchdowns. Murphy comes out of the Champlain College, St. Lambert, football program where he was the RSEQ Division 3 Outstanding Player on Offence in 2018.

RSEQ Defensive Rookie of the Year – Jean William Rouleau, Université Laval

Coming from Rimouski’s D3 program, Jean-William Rouleau has seen a stellar progression this season. Promoted to a starting role in the third game of the year, he did not give head coach Glen Constantin the chance to change his mind. In seven games this season, the civil engineering student managed 12.5 tackles in addition to forcing a fumble. The defensive line of which he was a part of gave up only 72 points this season, the lowest in Canada.
