Roberts impressive in Lions win

Precision passing, stellar defense and a flawless game plan helped the Cambridge Lions to a 3-0 start this season, as they dismantled the Halton Cowboys on their home field.

The Lions came out of the gates fast and furious, scoring touchdowns on each of their first two drives to start the game and they never looked back.

James Roberts was able to do whatever he wanted Saturday night and he did just that, spreading the ball out between Brendan McCracken and Steven Warner in a mesmerising performance that had the Cowboys looking dazed and confused.

The Cowboys were able to make an impressive goal line stand at the end of the first quarter, as they forced Lions running back, Alexander Salytchev to fumble, giving themselves an opportunity to get back into the game. However, the Lions defense stood strong again, pressuring Daniel Bateman into his first interception of the game.

The turnover lead to James Roberts’ third touchdown pass of the evening in an impressive offensive display where he threw six touchdowns, while managing the game and tiring out the defense with first down after first down.

Halton was finally able to get on the scoreboard at the end of the third quarter when Bateman was able to find Tevon Brown for a 77-yard pass and run td, making it 42-7. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as the Lions defense stifled the Cowboys, minimizing their opportunities and playing an aggressive defense.

The Cambridge victory sets up a great matchup as the undefeated Lions will host the 3-0 Niagara Spears at Jacob Hespeler Field next week. Two of the leagues heavy weights will battle it out in a game, where only one will remain undefeated.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
