Riders take CFC blogger Shomari Williams first overall

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have made Queenā€™s University defensive end Shomari Williams the first overall pick in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft.

CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon announced the pick moments ago live on TSN as part of a Canadian Draft special that airs until 2 p.m. ET today.

Williams is a lightning quick 6ā€™2ā€ 236 pound defender who led the Queenā€™s Golden Gaels to a Vanier Cup in 2009. He was the top rated prospect by the CFL Amateur Scouting Bureau heading into the Draft.

Draft analysts suggested he will likely be shifted to linebacker in the CFL and could contribute to the Ridersā€™ pass rush coming off the edge in defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverryā€™s schemes.

That could help address an important need for the Riders in the wake of the departures of defensive ends and sack specialists John Chick and Stevie Baggs.

The Riders obtained the first overall pack in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts announced this morning.

The deal saw Saskatchewan trade the second and fourth picks and non-impot punter Jamie Boreham to Toronto in exchange for the first and eighth pick.

This is the first time the Riders have held the first overall selection since 2001 when they drafted Long-time Rider offensive lineman Scott Schultz.
