Queen’s, Kingston & football community in mourning

This past Tuesday, former player and coach Doug Hargreaves passed away at the age of 84.

Hargreaves passed away peacefully at his home in Kingston, Ontario.

Football played a significant role in his life. Hargreaves played the sport with the Queen’s Gaels in the 1950’s.

Soon after his playing career came to end, Hargreaves moved on to the coaching ranks. Ā Among the stints were Head Coach of the Royal Military College in Kingston from 1965-70. Head Coach of the Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie Football Team and Queen’s Gaels Head Coach.

During his tenure with the Gaels which began in 1976, he led the team to 13 league championship appearances, 16 straight OQIFC playoff appearances and three Vanier Cup Championship appearances which the team won twice. Overalll,Hargreaves lifetime coaching record was128 wins, 103 losses and three ties. Ā Upon his retirement in 1994, Hargreaves instructed the most games in CIAU history with 233.

Recognized for his efforts, Hargreaves won five OQFIC Coach of the Year Honours as well as the CIS’ Frank Tindall Award in 1983. Ā He left a lasting legacy as the Gaels player who is named the Offensive Player of the Year is bestowed the Doug Hargreaves Trophy.

Moreover, Hargreaves was named to the both the Queen’s Coaches Hall of Fame and Queen’s Football Hall of Fame as well as the Kingston Sports Hall of Fame.

Among the committees Hargreaves served on were the CIAU Rules Committee for a decade and Football Canada’s Working Committee where he helped to establish Coaching Certification program nationally.

A celebration of Hargreaves life will be held on Sunday July 10th from 2-5pm at the Royal Military College’s Senior Staff Mess in Kingston, Ontario. Ā The family has offered that contributions can be made toĀ Hospice Kingston, Residence Program at canadahelps.org or to the charity of your choice.
