QC JUV D1/1B GAME PREVIEWS (4): CFC50s go head to head, CFC25 matchup of the season

This week in the RSEQ Juvenile football division, believe it or not, has playoff implications. Yes PLAYOFFS, and it’s only week 4(D1) & 3(D1B) in the season. Last year’s D1 Champs are holding on but face the top team this week while Armand-Corbeil and Roger-Comtois fight for their first win, which puts them right on the heals.

Meanwhile, in D1B, undefeated Collège Laval and Collège Bourget battle each other the team that takes the loss drops to 3rd or 4th, and with a format change in the D1B playoffs the top two teams receive a playoff bye while the bottom two are eliminated. It just shows you every week counts…talk about a pressure cooker.

DIV 1

CFC50 No. 35 E. Sec. Cure-Antoine-Labelle LES LOUPS   vs CFC50 No. 48 E. Sec. du Triolet HARFANGS

Each team has a 2-1 record this game will begin to separate the bottle neck that currently sits in the middle of the division. Triolet’s Yanick Daigle will be ready to come out firing. Currently, Daigle has passed for over 860 yards – that’s 270 yards more than the QB behind him. If he can continue his focus and target his key receivers, Triolet will be able to light the scoreboard up. Their defence, lead by Emerik Charon and Felix Mercier, will load up the pressure on the Wolfpack offence.

Speaking of the Les Loups (wolfpack), their offence has struggled the first couple weeks of the season which is normal. However, the pack-like defence has been stingy to say the least, allowing an average of 11.7 points. This defence flies to the ball making it difficult for offences to breath. At the end of the day, if the Wolfpack’s offence can move the ball and score a couple majors, the D will keep them in the game. This one will likely come down to the kickers – single point or a safety.

E. Sec. Roger Comtois PATRIOTES vs E. Sec. Armand-Corbeil SCORPIONS

Someone comes out this week with their first win, likely setting themselves up for a chance at the playoffs. With 10 teams in the division and the last 3 teams not making it, every game counts for these two teams and getting a win here sets them up for that chance. The Patriotes offence has its struggles, however, they do move the ball, it’s just finding the end zone that is the problem. Defensively, they allow an average of 35.6 points per game. They need to tighten things up if they plan on getting a win.

Speaking of struggles, the Scorpions are still on that learning curve to moving up the division. They need to pull things together. QB Mathew Landry needs to get settled and make his connections with his receivers. He needs to find the form he had last year and this might be the game that does it for him.

But it still seems Scorpions are still learning and the Patriotes will work out their first win of the season.

CFC50 No. 23 Collège Charles-Lemoyne DYNAMICS vs CFC50 No. 41 College Notre Dame CACTUS

Some would call this the coin flip pick of the week. These two teams are so evenly matched – and not on just one side of the ball.  CCL’s offensive weapons CFC100 Kaelan Trepanier, CFC100 Kenzy Paul, and Noah Gravel or equally matched by Notre Dame’s Tristan Aboud, Mathieu Lafleur and CFC100 Merton Theagene. If you’re a fan of defence this might not be the game for you. This game should light the score board on fire. But then again, day could be night and light is dark and the defences step up and just shut everyone down. Either way – flip the coin.

… It came up tails, so CACTUS with and this may be bold OT win.

CFC50 No. 47 Collège Jean-Eudes AIGLES vs CFC50 No. 10 Saint-Jean Eudes CONDORS

Saint-Jean Eudes would like to exact revenge for their shocking defeat in last years playoffs. The Condors are a well balanced offence averaging 33 points per game. QB Eduard Vachon has the benefit of being able to spread the ball around in the air and on the ground. CFC100 Mathieu Roy has tallied up  5 TDs in the air and on the ground. The Condor Defence, lead by Justin Cloutier (25.5 combined tackles 3 sacks), has not allowed a score since week 1 and riding this wave – 6 INTs and 12 sacks. This defence are ball hawks wait Ball CONDORS  and punish apposing Offences.

If the Aigles are to pull out a Cinderella story victory as they did in the playoffs last year, they will need their best out of QB Charles Foisy and receiver David Mailoux Colin. However having only 33 points on the season, exactly one third of the Condors tally, they will need every player on both sides of the ball to step up. It’s a huge step, but veteran players from last year know it can be done. As for the Pick, well its regular season everything is not on the line yet so it tends to lack the intensity of playoff football. Condors all the way.

DIV 1B

Académie les Estacades ESTACADES  vs CFC25 No. 7 Sem. Saint-Joseph VERT ET OR

Estacades is a much better team than their record shows. If they can fire on all cylinders, they should be able to give the Green and Gold a run for their money. But they need their star defensive players – Simon Tafur-Casas. Louis-Pillipe Turner, and Tommy Lebel to step up. If QB Shane Auger and receiver Anthony Mongrain can get on the same page the rest of this fast paced offence can get rolling.

However…… Vert et Or QB Simon Brunelle and RB Antonin Roy may have a few things to say. The run and shoot style offence allows them to spread the ball around to multiple threats. Anthony Gaillardetz by far is their biggest offensive weapon. But when you spread the ball around like they do, it’s tough to know where the strike will come. 10 receivers are registered in the stats.

That said the Estacades defense might just keep it close enough where they can pull out the upset of the week.

Polyvalent Deux Montagnes CENTURIONS vs E. Sec. Pointe-Levy CORSAIRES

One of these two teams will get their first victory. The Corsaires are the engine that could. Having a registered roster of 33 players, they are all players with class and heart. NEVER count out this team. Dylan Djete is by far the number one target and Mikael Aubin lays out the ground game pounding the ball and just keeps rolling. Despite a heavy loss last week, this team plays with heart – a factor you can’t measure. Every dog has his day and it may come this week.

Something needs to give for the Centurions. On paper, this team has it all – size, and speed on both sides of the ball and stacks up with a 69 player roster – just 1 short of the league max. So what gives? Honestly, the offensive production has been very lacking scoring only 15 points on the season thus far. Which means the defence is spending too much time on the field. With a new head coach, everyone needs to get on the same page. Let’s see if they can get it done this week. If not, it could be a rough season again for the Centurions. Honestly, it makes sense to pick the Centurions over the Corsaires as they have a 2-1 player roster, but that said, the team with the biggest heart comes out on top. And that simply put…is the Corsaires.

CFC25 No. 4 Collège Bourget VOLTIGEURS  vs CFC25 No. 17 College Laval MARAUDERS

Battle of  two undefeated teams. At the end of the day someone goes home with the possibility of being top of the division to middle of the pack. Every game counts.

Collège Bourget is making waves their first year in the division. An explosive offence, Bourget averages 38 points per game, however this is the first time they are playing one of the stronger teams in the division. Running back Jayden-Josiah Theodore has tore up the turf, racking up 359 yards on 42 carriers. That’s an average of 180 yards a game and on track for 1436 yards for the season. Let’s see if he can maintain his average of what seems to be a vastly improved Marauders team.

Collège Laval goes to the air and QB Victor Charland spreads the ball around. Nine receivers on the stat sheets and 5 receivers with 50 plus yards or more over two games – Laval know how to diversify. However, with 10 names on the stat sheet for carries and only having 141 yards on the ground, it makes you wonder if they have become one dimensional on the offence? BUT, and this is a big BUT, they do have one of the stingiest defences in the division. If this defence can stop the run attack of Bourget, expect Laval to come out on top.

CFC25 No. 10 E. Sec. Saint Stanislas PATRIOTES vs Collège de Lévis COMMANDEURS

These two are sitting at 1-1 however it seems the Patriotes found their stride last week – both on offence and defence. The defence held, allowed only 10 points last week and took a score back for themselves with a blocked field goal along with 4 turnovers. Offensively, they came out with a new look with starting QB Benjamin Carpentier going 10 for 14 attempts at 138 yards and 3 majors. Wembi Leba lead the offensive stats with a combined 113 yards and 2 tds.

Commandeurs are no slouch their offence can get the job done. QB Thomas Cloutier is another QB that tend to spread the ball around. If the Commandeur’s defence can keep them in the game, this will be tighter that you think. Maxim Létourneau, Antoine Guay-Tanguay need to lead by example on defence and its very possible they can pull out the upset victory.

At the end of the day, the Patriotes are very explosive and the defence makes you earn every yard. But Commandeurs are playing with a chip on their shoulder. Commandeurs may pull out the upset.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
