Previews and Predictions (Sask HS): Battle of undefeated in Saskatoon

Each and every week, Sask Tipster brings you the week’s preview and predictions for Saskatchewan high School Football. Here are this week’s previews and predictions for games in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw leagues:

REGINA INTERCOLLEGIATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE (RIFL):

Winston Knoll Wolverines (1-3) vs. Balfour Redmen (2-2)

Winston Knoll Wolverines is off to a slow 1-3 start this year, losing to the two Regina powerhouses  – CFC#12 LeBoldus Golden Suns and CFC#8 Campbell Tartans as well as the Riffel Royals. While the Wolverines have been bolstered by the play of defensive lineman Brandon Mason, they have been unable to stop the run and it has been a big factor in those losses.

Although not as tough as the top two teams in Regina, the Balfour Redmen are better than their record indicates. Led on defense by linebacker Alex Lenius, expect the Redmen to shut down the Wolverines ground game. They also rely heavily on the run and this one will play out based on the abilities of Redman’ running back Ryan Schienbein the offensive line. If they establish the run early, it will be another long night for the Wolverines.

PREDITION: Winston Knoll Wolverines 12 – Balfour Redmen 27

Tanner Zaharia 1

O’Neill Titans (4-1) vs. Greenall Griffins (3-2)

The Titans have shown the ability to develop future CJFL and CIS athletes in the years past, and this year is no exception. Jordan Tholl and Parker Smith are well capable of dominating a game at the line of scrimmage.  You can expect them to continue to develop into future high level football athletes. The Greenall Griffins will need to plan their game execution around them. On Greenall’s side, their strategy has been to give the ball to star athlete Tanner Zaharia. The Titans will be ready for it and if they can limit his big plays, they win this one.

PREDITION: O’Neill Titans 28, Greenall Griffins 21

Centennial Chargers 2014

SASKATOON SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTORATE (SSSAD):

CFC#25 Holy Cross Crusaders (5-0) vs. Centennial Chargers (5-0)

Centennial Chargers will attempt to take sole possession of first place as they take on the CFC#25 Holy Cross Crusaders. Centennial has been very solid on both sides of the ball this year, earning a well-deserved 5-0 start to the 2014 season. QB Chris Campbell and RB Adam Machart do most of the damage on the offense, while LB Riley Pickett leads the defense. The Crusaders will rely on RB Josh Ewanchina, REC Anthony Ferwerda and QB Tyler Hermann to cause headaches for opposing coordinators. Their ability to switch from the run to the pass makes it very difficult to game plan against. CFC#25 Crusaders is the higher ranked team, but they are not unbeatable. Expect this game to come down to big yardage plays on the ground.

It’s a battle of good RB’s going against strong defenses.

PREDICTION: Holy Cross Crusaders 42, Centennial Chargers 35

Marcus-Kouri

MOOSE JAW HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (MJHSFL):

Yorkton Regional Raiders (4-0) vs. Swift Current Colts (3-1)

Yorkton Raiders offense is as fast as it comes. The team’s no huddle strategy has paid off surprisingly well this year, leading them to a 4-0 start. First year QB Nick Payne, along with Zak Kais and Alex Popoff are the top three standouts on the Yorkton squad. Speaking of starting fast, the Swift Current Colts put up a whopping 42 points in the first half this past weekend’s 48-43 win. The 3-1 start this season can be attributed in part to the strong play of their pass game. Receivers Marcus Mayall and Marcus Kouri are difficult to cover, helping QB Dalton Christiansen to throw for over 300 yards per game. Will Yorkton’s aggressive style of football be too much for Swift Current to handle? We’ll find out on Thursday!

PREDICTION: Yorkton Regional Raiders 49, Swift Current Colts 35
