Panthers drub Dragons in minor football play


FALL RIVER, N.S. ā€” The Cape Breton East Side Marioā€™s Panthers improved their record to 2-0 with a 22-14 victory over the Fall River Dragons in Nova Scotia Minor Football League action, Sunday.

The Dragons opened scoring in the second quarter after a Panthersā€™ turnover on their own 32-yard line. Halfback Cory Cann scampered in from four yards out for the major, with Daniel Mader adding the extra point.

The Panthersā€™ offence responded on their ensuing possession, marching 65 yards downfield, with player of the game Keaton Fougere connecting with quarterback Brandon Buckingham on a screen pass for a 52-yard touchdown. Fougere also connected on the point-after kick to tie the game 7-7.

After a strong defensive stand, the Panthers were able to take a halftime lead of 14-7 when Buckingham connected with tight end Nick Walsh for a 27-yard touchdown, with Fougere making the kick.

In the second half, Fall River was able to put a drive together resulting in Cannā€™s second touchdown of the day, on a three-yard run, with Mader connecting on the kick to knot things up 14-14.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthersā€™ defence took over and was able to shut the Dragons down. Fougere continued his strong play with a 37-yard sweep to put the Panthers ahead for good.

Offensively for the Panthers, Buckingham went 4-for-5 passing for 96 yards and Fougere rushed for 107 yards. Jalen Borden, Jordan Hart and Duncan Ballie led the defence with four tackles each.

Panthers return to action Sunday versus the Windsor Warlords at the Membertou Field. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
