OVFL championship predictions (varsity, JV, peewee)

Here we go again. CFC coaches poll attempts (as always, we are terrible) to predict this weekends winners. Read what our coaches think.

We polled a total of 9 coaches this week for Varsity, 8 for JV and 4 for peewee.

Last weeks coaches poll record: (overall record 20 and 11)

VARSITY 1 AND 1 (overall playoffs 6 and 4)
JUNIOR VARSITY 1 AND 1 (overall playoffs 7 and 3)
PEEWEE 2 AND 0 (overall playoffs 7 and 3)

Ottawa Myers Riders (10-0) Vs Niagara Spears (9-1)
Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 11:00am
Nepean Sportsplex – Minto Field – Ottawa

Niagara record 9-1
For – 254
Against – 95
per game for – 25.4
per game against – 9.5

Myers record 10-0
For – 337
Against – 29
per game for – 33.7
per game against – 2.9

Defense, defense, defense. And some more. These two teams got to the final with great defensive play all season. Myers comes into the game as the favourites and will be playing on their home turf. The old turf at Minto field may pose a problem for the spears early in the game. (Hopefully that turf will be gone soon)

The spears will have a chance if their big offensive weapons like Corey Verkuyl, Adam Evans and Trevon Demon get into the game early. If that is the case then the myers offense will have to get into gear and QB Michael Arruda and his fifth leading passing yards of 777 during the season will have to lead the charge.

JUNIOR VARSITY
Brampton Bulldogs (9-2) vs. Cambridge Lions (9-1)
Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 3:00pm
Nepean Sportsplex – Minto Field – Ottawa

Brampton record 9-2
For – 344
Against – 200
per game for – 31.3
per game against – 18.2

Cambridge record 9-1
For – 249
Against – 120
per game for – 24.9
per game against – 12

Let the track meet begin. Varga, Johnson, Asiamah-Yeboah, Nelson, Trinh. Defense wins championships but these two teams have so many weapons that it will be the team who makes the least mistakes and most big plays who will come out on top. The fast turf at minto field will accentuate this.
If the bulldogs give QB Christian Strong good protection they will win. If the Lions give Varga the ball in space and open some holes (and he doesn’t need much) they will win. This will be a great one.

VARSITY

Essex Ravens (8-3) vs Ottawa Cumberland Panthers (10-1)
Saturday August 21, 7:00pm
Nepean Sportsplex – Minto Field – Ottawa

Cumberland record 10-1
For – 339
Against – 122
per game for – 30.8
per game against – 11.1

Essex record 8-3
For – 391
Against – 186
per game for – 35.6
per game against – 16.9

Who is playing? Cumberland star LB Ron Omara has an OFC junior game scheduled. Star essex QB Austin Kennedy should be at University of Windsor’s camp as should Dakota Stewart. Cumberland players wilson, short, cave, patenaude should all be at Ottawa U camp. This situation is unfair to all involved. A player missing a day or two of training camp in the CIS almost assures his first year is written off. A team losing their best players for a championship game is disastrous.
Without knowing who is playing changes the odds. Straight up the best 3 players on the field will be Omara, Kennedy, and Crawford. Essex has 2 of the 3. Championship games are all about big time players making big time plays.
