On a brisk and blustery Sunday morning that resembled traditional “playoff” weather, the action quickly heated up as things got underway in the inaugural ONTARIO PROSPECT CHALLENGE. In the wind tunnel affectionately known as Varsity stadium in Guelph, the opening match on the slate was the Fox 40 “Minor” game featuring some of the provinces best 10-12 year old football players. With no special teams in the modified all-star format, Dave Lovegrove’s Team Central All-Stars, made up of players from the GTA, Ottawa and Sault Ste. Marie, started on offence from their own forty yard line. Making clear their intentions, Team Central came out in a full house backfield, lining up in the power T and true to the formation embarked on a ground and pound campaign gaining 8 yards up the gut on the game’s first play. Three plays later Tyriq Cornwall-Quayson displayed speed, quickness and power as he hammered through the West team’s front seven then ran away from their defensive backs en route to a electrifying 48 yard touchdown run. Marcus Watson converted taking the option pitch to the endzone giving Team Central a 7-0 lead.

Coach Joe Sardo’s Team West team surprised everyone by coming out in the no huddle offence and led by the strong armed Michael Dwyer chose to throw the ball. Scoring on their first drive, the tone was set for what looked to be a shootout. That was not to be the case however, as both defences settled down and adopted bend but don’t break policies. Led by players like #70 Logan Olson and #71 Joseph Sardo, the Team West defensive line held when badly needed, courtesy of a goalline stand and several key stops. There was no scoring in either the second or third quarter, but finally in the fourth Team Central’s ground game proved too much as Marcus Gardener and Greg Sealy Jr. showed just how deep the central team’s backfield was, both scoring on highlight reel runs. Final score Team Central 19 Team West 7
