ONT (ROPSSAA Tier 1): Saints & Crusaders earn shutouts, Angels victorious

With another week in the books the playoff picture for many teams is beginning to take shape.

St. Marcellinus Saints 25, St. Francis Xavier Tigers 0

With another strong showing this season St. Marcellinus Spirit move to 4-1 on the season with a dominant shutout win over St. Francis Xavier Tigers.

“The guys worked hard and I’m proud of the way we played,” commented Spirit Head Coach Vinny Saliba.

The Spirit are now second in the South Division in ROPSSAA Tier 1 sitting behind Lorne Park Spartans with a game in hand.

“We played a good four quarters of football, minimizing penalties meant that we didn’t kill ourselves allowing us to sustain long offensive drives,” said Saliba.  “The guys knew we needed to win these last two games if we wanted to make the playoffs this year.”

“Getting the win against St. Francis Xavier positions us well in the playoff race.”

However there is no time to rest. The focus has immediately shifted toward their game against St. Joan of Arc Angels next week.

“We need a good week of practice, staying focused on the task at hand which is St. Joan of Arc,” said Saliba.  “The guys know we need to win our last game of the season to secure a playoff spot.”

After failing to make the post-season since 2010 the Senior team has a realistic opportunity to end that streak this season with a good showing in the final game of the season.

Head Coach Nick Mazzone of St. Francis Xavier was not available for comment.

St. Joan of Arc Angels 16, Meadowvale Falcons 6

Coming off their bye week,  the St. Joan of Arc Angels took to the field for a must win game against Meadowvale Falcons. The result a convincing win with a strong defensive showing moving them to 3-1 on the season.

The Angels are now sitting in the middle of ROPSSAA’s South Division in the fourth spot.

“Our defensive unit as a whole really performed well and allowed us to stay in the game and get the win this week,” said Angels Head Coach Tom Pianta.

The defense really needed to step up this week after the blowout loss they suffered the week before to St. Joseph Jaguars.

Moving forward, the Saints have two games left on the schedule and their playoff fate has yet to be determined.

“We need to win our last two games of the season and really play mistake free football before we can talk about playoffs,” said Pianta.

At 3-1 the Arc Angels have positioned themselves with just that opportunity.

“We need to focus on minimizing penalties and playing more efficiently,” said Pianta.
