OMFL: (Varsity & JV) Storm get exceptional play from Dowd, Clout & Lamb

The opening weekend of OMFL action on may 22nd saw both Niagara Storm Varsity & Junior Varsity teams travel to Georgetown District High School to participate in the opening day extravaganza. The Varsity squad faced the always strong Hamilton Steelers while the Junior Varsity squad faced off against the North Halton Crimson Tide.

The Varsity game saw exceptional play by numerous Storm members, some playing both ways. The Storm fought back from an 11 point half time deficit but in the end the Steelers squeaked out a 28 to 25 victory. Varsity head coach Don Moses had this say about his teams effort.

“I am very proud of the fact that my guys never gave up. Playing a strong Hamilton team with 40+ players was a great test of character for the Storm. Losing a few key players early in the game to injuries and not having enough depth in the roster hurt our chances to rest players and give them a chance to rebound. Losing the ‘Give away Take away’ ratio was the tail of the tape.”

Varsity hilites:
Mitchell Gardiner #22 Scored a Touchdown
Greg Lamb #12 Kicked a 33 yard Field Goal and 2 TD Converts
Jordan Clout #32 Scored 2 Touchdowns
Cody Speller #69 & Rob Golfi #91 Safety
Kevin Linger #26 Interception
Rob Golfi #91 Fumble Recovery

The young junior varsity team found themselves in a tougher match against North Halton. Kael Reilly has a strong game on defence and the ‘hit of the game’ was by Kyle Bell. The Storm fell by a score of 45 to 7 with Graham Dowd scoring the only touchdown. Storm head coach Dave Richardson had this to say about the teams performance.

“We as a team are going to chalk this one up as a learning experience for a young team and move forward. North Halton played an excellent game, however we made key mistakes at critical times on both sides of the ball.”
