Olson announces wave of early B.C. signings: Includes CFC top QB Canales


VANCOUVER – UBC Thunderbirds football head coach Shawn Olson has announced an impressive list of early commitments to the T-Bird program. With the new year in full swing, UBC has added some of the top B.C. high school players in addition to an influx of B.C. players looking to transfer back to their home province.


B.C HIGH SCHOOL COMMITMENTS

Cameron Canales
QB 6-0, 200 lbs
Terry Fox
2010 AAA Offensive Player of the Year

Canales led Terry Fox to a birth in the AAA Championship game and went on to start as a DB for Team BC in the Canada Cup. According to Olson he is, “a special player with the ball in his hand. Cam is an outstanding athlete and leader who will bring his swagger and competiveness to the Blue and Gold.”

Josh Cochrane
WR 6-1, 170 lbs
South Delta

Cochrane was one of top receivers in BC high school football last season. The son of former UBC great, Terry, Olson said, “he is both smooth and explosive and has lead the Sun Devils the last two season in receiving.”

Riley Jones
LB 6-1, 205 lbs
South Delta
2010 AA all-star

Also from South Delta, Jones led his team with 9.8 tacklers per game in 2010. “He’s a hard working, hard hitting linebacker who has been a leader for the Sun Devils the last two years,” noted Olson.

Ian Henderson
LB/DE 6-2, 205 lbs
New Westminster

Henderson led the AAA division with 9.9 tackles per game in 2010. Olson said, “Ian was the heart and soul of the Hyacks defence this past season and continues the tradition of outstanding linebackers to come out of that program.”

Hayden Nicol
WR 6-0, 180 lbs
North Delta/Carson Graham
2009 AAA all-star (QB)

One of the top players in the province in 2009 at Carson Graham, Nicols spent 2010 at North Delta. Olson added, “he has great hands and run after catch ability.”

Warren Reece
RB 5-9, 190 lbs
North Delta/New Westminster

Reece led North Delta in rushing this past season and was the second when he suited up at New Westminster in 2009. “Warren is an outstanding athlete and tenacious runner,” said Olson.
