Myers defeats Thunder in Peewee OV action

The Ottawa Myers Riders visited Birchmount stadium to take on the home team Toronto Thunder in Ontario Varsity Football League peewee action Sunday morning. The game turned into a sloppy one with a multitude of penalties and turnovers. Nonetheless, both teams fought hard until the final whistle.

The first play from scrimmage started on a sour note for the home team when the visitors pounced on a fumble. Not long after Myers Riders capitalized on the turnover and scored at 10:31 of the opening quarter when #3, Matthew Duffy caught a touchdown from #1, Michael Arruda. Arruda kicked the convert to make the score 7 to 0. Half way through the opening quarter the Thunder again fumbled the ball, this time on a botched punt return, and the Riders recovered the ball on the 20 yard line. A few plays later Arruda threw his second TD pass, this time a 25 yarder to #10 Kevin Duprey to make score 14 to 0 (Arruda kicked convert).

The remainder of the half saw the Riders defense come up big with a stand on fourth down thrice, once with the Thunder starting the possession on the Riders own 4 yard line. The Thunder did manage to score a point on a rouge single by #47 Rakeem Simms to make the half time score 14 to 1.

The second half saw much the same script as the Myers offense was kept off the score board but the Myers did recover a Thunder fumble in the end zone, by #44 Ethan Goulet, to make the score 20 to 1 (convert was unsuccessful). The Toronto Thunder did score with 2:36 remaining in the game by #32 Nathaniel Johnson (convert was unsuccessful), but by that time it was too little, too late. Final 20 to 7.
