Maritime Football League – Saint John Longhorns & Saint John Wanderers merge operations

A meeting was held in Saint John between the combined executives of the Saint John Wanderers and the Saint John Longhorns of the Maritime Football League.

The two teams are pleased to announce a merger of their organizations. “When we weighed all of the pros and cons, we determined that this was the best thing for football in Saint John” said Dave Grandy – Assistant Coach of the Wanderers.

The two teams have been working against each other the past few years to attract the top football talent and each team has had some struggles with commitment. By combining the teams, expect to see a team with a roster size of 40 – 50.

With the merger, the teams have agreed to the following:

* To play this season as the Wanderers. Next season, the team will choose a new name.
* The team will be run by an executive comprising of 2 members of the Longhorns and 2 member of the Wanderers.
* The coaching staffs have combined, with Mark Gallagher serving as head coach of the team.

“This was not a case of either team failing, this was a result of the desire of both teams to put the best possible product on the field” said MFL Commissioner Eric Sabean. “A lot of the younger players have decided they wanted to play in the AFL only, which has diminished the pool of available players slightly” added the Commissioner. “With this merger, we are going to see a much stronger league. We now have just one team per municipality. We’re in for a great summer of football”
