“Love at first sight” for Golden Hawks commit

Golden Hawks add Ontario commit to their Class of 2018.

It was love at first sight between Ben McAlpine, a wide receiver from Brantford Collegiate Institute, and the Sir Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks.

Drawn to the small campus size, McAlpine saw a lot that he liked at Laurier. He said he likes the residence and “(I) love the city, love the coaches and the facilities are great.”

Throughout the recruitment process, McAlpine said the coaches were great and supportive. “They are going to be great to work with. They know how to be successful and treat you not only like a football player, but also like a man,” the potential sociology student added.

McAlpine played five years with the Brantford CI Mustangs (Brant Country Secondary School Athletic Association) and two with the Brantford Bisons (OFC). He is 6’2, 200lbs and is a two-time participant in the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge. He has also spent one year on the Cambridge Lions (OPFL).

In 2015 and 2017, he captured a high school championship. In his first year of high school, he was named as the most improved player. The following year he was defensive MVP. He was also a MVP this season.

Not isolated to football, McAlpine is an accomplished rugby player as well. This season, he won a championship with his high school team and an OFSAA bronze medal.

Originally from Brantford, Ontario, McAlpine is already pretty comfortable with his new school. He said, “It seems like a place I can call home.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
