LOPEZ TURNING HEADS AT CFL EVALUATION CAMP (video)

University of Toronto Varsity Blues football player Hugo Lopez posted top results at the 2011 CFL Evaluation Camp, March 4-6, in Toronto.

The 2011 Evaluation Camp presented by Reebok started Friday afternoon with player arrivals and team interviews. On Saturday, the playersā€™ strength and flexibility were tested at the Park Hyatt Toronto Hotel, with the camp finishing on the football field at Varsity Centre at the University of Toronto on Sunday.

Lopez was among 45 of the Canada’s top football prospects and underwent a series of testing for the CFL scouts in attendance.

ā€œHugo tested very well at the E-Camp,ā€ commented Varsity Blues head coach Greg DeLaval. ā€œA number of CFL teams talk to me about him. I believe someone will draft him because of his size, attitude and his passion for special teams. He is a pro in my mind; someone just needs to work with him and he will deliver.ā€

A fourth-year defensive back, Lopez ranked third overall and led all defensive backs in the broad jump on Saturday, with a jump of 10 feet, six inches. He led all DBs and finished fifth overall in the vertical jump (40 inches), while also recording an impressive results in the bench press, ranking sixth among defensive backs with 13 repetitions.

Lopez continued to shine on Sunday, ranking fourth overall in the shuttle run with a time of 4.10 seconds. He also ranked sixth among defensive backs in both the 3-cone drill (7.00) and 40-yard dash (4.65).

ā€œOverall, I thought my performance was great in terms of testing,ā€ said Lopez. ā€œI showed my athleticism, the interviews went well and [talks] with coaches were good. I was a little disappointment with my one on ones today. There are some things that I need to improve on [in order to get] and invitation to CFL camp but I felt good overall.ā€

Lopez joined the Varsity Blues after word that the Waterloo Warriors would not participate in the 2010 OUA football season. The Newmarket, Ont., native made 22 tackles and one interception in eight games played this season, and helped the Blues upset the then No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees at home – U of T’s first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating Waterloo 21-15 on Sept. 19, 1997.
