Recently, the 6ā€™1, 240 pound linebacker (middle) from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia committed to the Saint Maryā€™s Huskies.Ā  Deturbide will join the team for the 2015 AUS season.

ā€œBy going to Saint Maryā€™s, I will continue a tradition, as my parents and relatives are Saint Maryā€™s alumni,ā€ elaborated Deturbide.

Moreover, academics and proximity played a role in his decision.

ā€œSaint Maryā€™s is close to home and I would like to study criminology,ā€ said the Nova Scotia linebacker.Ā  ā€œSMU has a great criminology program.ā€

ā€œWhen they invited me to attend a recent recruitment dinner,ā€ explained the defensive standout. ā€œI was really impressed.ā€

ā€œSMU has a great football tradition and the facilities are first class. SMU also made me feel very welcome and I got to meet the coaches as well as the university president. It was a great experience overall.Ā  Saint Maryā€™s is also in a rebuild and I want to be a part of helping the Huskies return to being a championship team.ā€

Deturbide suited up for the Prince Andrew Panthers of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL).Ā  This past season, he was selected as a Nova Division First Team All-Star as he guided the Panthers to a postseason appearance in the semi-finals.Ā  The linebacker averaged 17 tackles a game during the season.Ā  He also recorded 14 sacks, two forced fumbles and two recoveries.

ā€œWe are extremely happy to add a student athlete like Ben to the SMU football family,ā€ commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.
