Lions assert dominance

With an explosive offense and an overwhelming defense, the Cambridge Lions were able to fend off the Niagara Spears, Saturday night to remain undefeated this season.

The Lions sideline was boasting with confidence, energy and enthusiasm even before kickoff. The fans felt the excitement and it translated into a nearly perfect performance by the home team.

It took only until the second play of the game for the Lions to get on the board, when Ashton Pilkey picked off a Blair Robertson pass and ran it back the other way to put his team ahead 7-0.

The Lions bench immediately erupted and the desire to remain undefeated was evident throughout the game. This team was not going to be beat that night.

Lions quarterback, James Roberts rose to the occasion in a big way. He consistently made nearly perfect passes, found open receivers and spread the ball around in the performance, while throwing for 275 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, it was defensive back, Mitchell Weiler, leading the defense in a captivating performance that saw him intercept two passes, immediately killing any sort of momentum Niagara had building up.

For the Spears, it seemed to be a story of missed opportunities and the inability to protect the football, in a game when each play could decide the outcome of the game. From turnovers to missed field goal attempts, the Spears simply didn’t match up to the performance the Lions brought to the field.

The Spears began to find their rhythm late in the fourth quarter, rallying to get within eight points. However, it was too little too late as they failed to recover an onside kick attempt, giving the Lions an opportunity to kneel their way to a fourth consecutive victory.

The Lions will make their way to the University of Windsor next weekend to battle the 3-1, Essex Ravens in an attempt to remain undefeated.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
