Leroy Blugh steps down as Bishop’s Head Football Coach

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Leroy Blugh announced today that is stepping down as the Head Football Coach at Bishop’s University for personal and family reasons, and that he will be returning to his hometown of Napanee, Ontario.

Blugh, arguably the greatest Gaiter of all-time, was the Gaiters’ head coach from 2005-10, and compiled a 19-30 regular-season record (19-33 overall). He presided over the resurgence of the Bishop’s University football program and its return to national prominence. In 2007, Blugh was named QUFL Coach of the Year, as he led the Gaiters to a 5-3 record, their first winning record since 1995, and a tie for second place in the league.

“We are disappointed to lose Coach Blugh,” said Tony Addona, the Bishop’s University Director of Athletics. “Coach Blugh has turned this program around, and leaves it in excellent condition. He has done some truly outstanding things in his time here. We understand that family comes first, and we wish Leroy the best as he returns home.”

“Leroy Blugh is admired and respected by his players, the entire University community, and football fans across the province,” said Principal Michael Goldbloom. “Leroy has made a difficult decision, but one that is best for him personally. He is a Gaiter to his core and we look forward to seeing Leroy on campus regularly as he continues to support his alma mater and his team.”

Addona has been named the Interim Head Coach for the 2011 season. He served as the Gaiters’ Interim Head Coach in 2004, and previously won eight Bol d’Or provincial championships with the Champlain Cougars. Ray Gagnon, the Defensive/Recruiting Coordinator, and Benoit Groulx, the Offensive Coordinator, remain in their current positions.

“Coach Blugh has brought in another strong recruiting class for this fall, and assembled an accomplished and cohesive coaching staff,” said Addona. “Our players will be ready to compete in Canada’s toughest football conference.”

The University will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent head coach during the fall of 2011.
