Laurier announces first football class

Scott Campbell – SB – 5-10 165 – Preston (Cambridge, Ont.)
Scott is the fastest football player in the Tri-City area coming out of the class of 2010. Also an outstanding track athlete, he won both the 100m & 200m city finals in 2009, posting a 10.9 in the 100m. Scott will add breakaway speed to the slotback position as well as special teams in the coming season.

Tyrrell Wilson – RB – 6-0 190 – St. Thomas More (Hamilton, Ont.)
Tyrell comes to the Golden Hawks as probably the most athletic football player to graduate from the Hamilton area this year. A multi-sport athlete, Tyrell is giving up his junior hockey career to attend university and play football for Laurier. With great speed, and a hard north-south running style look for Tyrell Wilson to make his mark on the Golden Hawks and OUA alike.

Matt Fisher – OL – 6-3 285 – Vanier College (Montreal, Que.)
Coming to Wilfrid Laurier from Brampton via Vanier College in Montreal, Matt continues with the pipeline from Vanier to Laurier. Among the best offensive lineman in Canada and also in Laurier’s class of 2010, Matt will go a long way to help to renew the talent in the trenches lost to graduation in 2009.

Luis Aranguren
– OL – 6-5 260 – Bishop Redding (Milton, Ont.)
Luis is another great addition to replenish the WLU offensive line. With great size and an excellent frame, Luis joins the Golden Hawks roster with one of the higher academic averages of the commitments so far. A hard worker with an excellent attitude, Luis Aranguren is the protégé of 2005 Vanier Cup MVP and All-Star DE David Montoya who coached him at Bishop Redding in Milton.

Jordan McAlpine
– QB – 6-5 200 – Fenelon Falls (Fenelon Falls, Ont.)
One of the top prospects to come out of Ontario in 2010, the Golden Hawks have landed a real gem in Jordan McAlpine. Jordan has tremendous arm strength, and is incredibly accurate, with throwing mechanics and footwork that will set him nicely to compete with our current roster. Along with an incoming academic average of over 90%, nothing but big things are expected from Jordan during his career for the Purple and Gold.

Shane Kelly – QB – 6-4 220 – Columbia University (New York, NY)
Hailing from New Jersey, Shane was originally on scholarship at Temple University where he dressed every game as a true freshman back-up. Following an overhaul of the TU coaching staff, Shane transferred to Columbia and became their starter. Shane now comes to Laurier for two years to enroll in our MBA program. With great size, an incredible knowledge of the game and an ability to run the most complicated of offences look for Shane Kelly to compete starting from day one.

Ben Davidson – OL – 6-1 260 – Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, B.C.)
Ben is another transfer joining the Hawks next fall. He comes from Simon Fraser University where he dressed every game and started most of them his last season. Another example of local talent, Ben graduated high school at Preston in Cambridge, ON. Multi-talented and very versatile on the OL Ben is capable of playing many positions along the Offensive Line. This versatility along with his experience give Ben an immediate opportunity at cracking a roster spot.

Jamal Mullings – RB – 5-10 180 – Northern Secondary School (Toronto, Ont.) Jamal also played OVFL for Metro Toronto Wildcats and also spent a season with the Jr Argonauts. He is quick and elusive, a classic tailback and a great fit for our spread offence.

A talented local player Mike is returning to KW to help the Laurier receiving corp. Last year he led the Tri-City Outlaws in receptions and yards for receivers.

Ahmad Omer – LB/FB/Kick Returner – 5-11 200 – Westminster S.S. (London, Ont. )
Versatile and very athletic Ahmad will make a contribution, potentially on either side of the ball.

Dan Harriss – DB 5-11 190 – London Oakridge, London Falcons (London, Ont.)
A dominant high school and OVFL player Dan has great instincts on the field and a reputation as a big play maker. He was the OVFL’s inteception leader.

Dennis Lyte – DB 5-10 185 – Acadia University (Burlington, Ont.)
Dennis is a shut down corner who can tackle in the open field. He is a tough physical DB who supports against the run very well.

Joe Cortese – DL 6-2 265 – Christ the King (Georgetown, Ont.)
Joe is very mobile and aggressive and will add some muscle to the inside of WLU’s veteran D-Line.

Jeff St Louis – DB 6-1 180 – Notre Dame(Burlington, Ont.)
Jeff is an intelligent and athletic player who can cover man-to-man deep. Jeff will be a great fit in WLU’s talented backfield.

A physical player from local powerhouse Bluevale Collegiate Jesse will compete at will or sam linebacker.

David Montoya – DE 6-0 235 – Notre Dame RC (Burlington, Ont.)
Returning for his final year David will demonstrate his relentless aggressive style that earned him defensive MVP in the 2005 Vanier Cup. Nobody will play harder or with more passion than this man. He will dominate.
