Langley Ram now flying with UBC Thunderbirds

UBC adds size and experience to their defensive line with their newest commit.

Football? Four years ago, Saeed Hosain-Ali, a defensive end from the Langley Rams (CJFL), didn’t even know what that was, but now he will be a member of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Hosain-Ali grew up in the landlocked, rugged terrain of Kazakhstan. It wasn’t until he reached Canada’s shores that he discovered the hard-hitting sport. He spent one season with the Centennial Centaurs (British Columbia High School Football Association) and two seasons with the Langley Rams in the CJFL.

Now the 6’2, 285lbs Burnaby, BC resident will have a chance to play with a school he has always took interest in. “I love to compete and I believe that is the only way to get better. When I met the players, they all had a competitive mindset in them at the same time respecting each other. That’s is unique,” Hosain-Ali said.

(Burnaby is located south-east of Vancouver.)

What a competitive athlete needs is a coach that follows the same mantra. Hosain-Ali found his counterpart in Head Coach Blake Nill. “I think he is the best coach that I know of and I’m confident he is the best in U Sports. His mindset and the passion for the sport is unreal and I love it,” he said.

“Also, I have met other coaches and they are all amazing could not ask for better coaching staff,” he added.

Despite never knowing of the sport until four years prior, Hosain-Ali has collected some recognition for his play. In 2014, he was the best lineman with the Centaurs. He was also an offensive lineman all-star in the BCHSFA that year. In 2015, he was named the most improved player with the Rams.

“I’m beyond excited for this opportunity and wanted to thank Coach Nill for this. I’m ready for work.”
